Teltow on the move: Young people decide on the mayoral election!
On June 24, 2025, it will be hot in Teltow, because the youth council invites you to the first question time with the candidates of the mayor. This event will take place on Wednesday afternoon in the youth club Teltow, located at Osdorfer Straße 9. Schoolchildren of the 9th to 13th grade are invited, which have the opportunity to address their questions directly to the candidates. Initiated by the young people as part of the “Jugend decides” project of the Hertie Foundation, this event aims to include the young Teltower into the political decision-making processes.
candidates for the election that takes place on September 28, 2025 are Claudia Eller-Funke from the SPD and André Freymuth from the CDU, which is also supported by the FDP. While Eller-Funke, who is 55 years old and has been heading as a head of unit in a Federal Ministry, has headed the city council sessions since July 2024, Freymuth is known as a professional soldier and examiner at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Both are city councilors and living in Teltow-Ruhlsdorf.
event and questions of the youth
The event is moderated by representatives of the youth advisory board and takes two hours. The start is at 3 p.m. The Teltow young people already have clear ideas and demand more secure school routes, a student ticket for local transport and more sports fields. This shows that you not only want to listen, but also to actively help shape. Such formats could certainly help to find the concerns of the youth in urban politics.
Both candidates have already received their nomination. Until the official application deadline on July 24, 2025, other candidates can submit their proposals. Not to forget that the reigning mayor Thomas Schmidt (SPD) will retire after a proud 24 years in office in January 2026.
The electoral system in Teltow
In Germany, the Basic Law regulates the municipal elections. An important point is that Union citizens with residence in Germany are entitled to vote and eligible. The mayoral elections in Teltow follow this pattern and are determined here on site by the municipal voting right. The election time will be on September 28, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and if none of the candidates receive the required 15 percent of the votes (around 3,200 votes for a total of 21,333 voters), a runoff election must take place on October 12, 2025. Such a choice always shapes the local political events and may be able to set new accents.
The election committee will decide which election proposals will be approved by August 1, 2025. For the parties and groups of voters that are already represented in the state of Brandenburg, there is no obligation to submit support signatures. So if you want to go to the political stage, you not only have a voice, but also the opportunity to become part of this exciting time in Teltow.
at a time when political and social issues are becoming increasingly up to date, the Teltow youth commitment and interest in their city shows. Whether through the first question time or through their demands, they make it clear that the future will be shaped together. And everyone can look forward to it!
