15 years of the Potsdam Plan Collection Foundation: Historical plans are returning!

The Potsdam Plan Collection Foundation, which is part of the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD), is celebrating a special anniversary on November 5, 2025: The 15th anniversary will be honored with a restoration highlight. In a celebratory setting, 15 historical plans from the extensive collection will be restored. These plans are not only historical witnesses, but also important for documenting the changes in the city of Potsdam.

On this festive day, which provides a lot of positive impulses not only for the foundation but also for monument preservation, a press event will take place at 1 p.m. in the Potsdam Museum - Forum for Art and History. Several high-profile personalities will be present: Bernd Rubelt, councilor for urban development, Detlef Schöning as founder, Katja Schlisio as chairwoman and her deputy colleague Michael Schöning, as well as Manuel Hase from the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

Restoration project of great importance

The 15 selected plans, most of which date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, show important building projects, including designs for residential buildings on Roonstrasse and Bismarckstrasse as well as historical site plans for the redesign of the square in front of the Church of the Redeemer. These documents, which were created using different techniques, sometimes show significant damage, which makes restoration all the more important.

The restoration is being carried out by the Potsdam paper restorer Engelmann-Stellmacher, who has a good knack for the challenge of securing these culturally and historically valuable documents. The Potsdam Plan Collection Foundation, which was founded in 2010, makes an indispensable contribution to the research and preservation of monuments in Brandenburg with its initiatives for preservation, care and scientific documentation.

An important legacy

The history of the plan collection itself goes back to 1990, when it was launched by the “Office for Monument Preservation” of the state capital Potsdam. At the beginning the collection included remains from previous archive holdings. In 1991, Detlef Schöning handed over his family's company archives to the Monuments Office, which gave the collection a strong boost.

With 5,800 sheets, most of which covered architectural drawings, the collection of plans came to the forefront of research. It was placed under protection in 2005 and already contained over 30,000 plans and drawings. This collection, which fascinates scientists and interested parties alike, has great historical and artistic significance.

Overall, the collection of plans is not only a place to store memories, but also a testament to Potsdam's architectural development, which will be further expanded in the coming years. Because as the saying goes: There is something going on – in the best sense of the word for the preservation of monuments and the cultural heritage of our city.
