30 years of the Lindenstrasse Memorial: A place of remembrance and encounter!
The Lindenstrasse Memorial in Potsdam is celebrating a very special milestone this year: it has been an important place of remembrance and communication of history for 30 years now. This will be celebrated on July 15, 2025 with a festive event that will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the courtyard of the memorial. Culture Minister Manja Schüle and Mayor Burkhard Exner will open the program with greetings. There is a diverse program that includes panels, contemporary witness interviews, film screenings and a concert. Mayor Exner describes the memorial as a formative place of education and remembrance that is not only of regional but national importance, as [Potsdam.de](https://www.potsdam.de/de/311-gedenkstaette-lindenstrasse- Feiert-30-geburtstag) reports.
The Lindenstrasse Memorial focuses on the history of political persecution and imprisonment under the Nazi dictatorship, under Soviet occupation and in the GDR. The fates of those people who were imprisoned for political reasons and the courageous people who helped to overcome the SED dictatorship are documented here. It is a former court and prison complex that now functions as an open history learning space. Visitors can experience the multimedia permanent exhibition as well as changing special exhibitions and take part in an extensive educational program. The memorial receives over 20,000 visitors every year, and demand is high, as the Lindenstrasse Memorial emphasizes.
Current developments and commitment
The Lindenstrasse Memorial Foundation was founded 10 years ago and has since created solid structures to ensure the preservation and further development of the site. Dr. Birgit-Katharine Seemann, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, emphasizes the continuous development, which is supported by committed civic engagement, in particular the “Lindenstrasse 54” support group. Financial resources from the city and state have also contributed significantly to stability.
In order to illustrate the importance of such memorial sites, the international web portal “Places of Remembrance” was launched in April 2025. This shows over 1,100 memorial sites worldwide that commemorate the victims of communist dictatorships. It particularly focuses on memorials from the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR as well as the memorial sites of the Katyń massacre. This initiative is a further project that aims to document the “topography of memory” for the victims of state repression, according to Orte des Remembers.
The Lindenstrasse Memorial is not only a place of mourning, but also of hope and learning. It symbolizes the victory of democracy in the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90 and remains a central starting point for anyone who wants to learn about Germany's history. Visitors are welcome to attend the 30th anniversary events on July 15 and support the important work of the memorial. The commitment of everyone involved is a strong sign of appreciation for history and human destiny.
