Baukultur Brandenburg: President Liedtke emphasizes common values!

On July 10, 2025, the sixth colloquium of the Brandenburg Building Culture Network took place at the Ministry of Infrastructure and State Planning in Potsdam. State Parliament President Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liedtke opened the event with a warm welcome as patron. In her lecture, she underlined the central role of building culture in our society, which not only creates places for remembrance and coexistence, but also space for dialogue and debate. “Every street and every square is an opportunity to communicate about our values, our history and our future,” says Liedtke. The colloquium offers space for reflection and new impulses to anchor building culture values in politics and society, informed the event participant landtag.brandenburg.de.

Among those present were State Secretary Dr. Ina Bartmann as well as representatives from ministries, chambers, associations, municipalities and universities. This broad spectrum of participants shows how important it is to network different actors in the field of building culture. The Baukultur Brandenburg network, which has been working under the patronage of Liedtke since 2016, brings these groups together to preserve tried and tested and develop new ideas.

A look at the building culture in Brandenburg

The building culture in Brandenburg receives additional support from the Baukultur Brandenburg e.V. support association, which was founded on February 18, 2020. The aim of this association is to raise awareness of good design and to actively promote building culture. Building culture includes all human activities that change and develop the built environment. Sustainable new buildings, sensitively renovated monuments and original conversions are particularly supported. A special highlight: The list of “places of building culture” in Brandenburg is regularly expanded and is open to suggestions from the public. Those interested also have the opportunity to place events and publications on the topic on the website, as is done by the support association baukultur-brandenburg.de.

In the numerous discussions and network meetings, not only theory is discussed, but practical approaches are also applied. The actors in building culture include not only urban planners, but also universities with their specific disciplines.

Academic perspectives

An example of interdisciplinary collaboration is the “Building Heritage and Sustainable Monument Preservation” course at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. Here are experts like Prof. Dr. Cristian Abrihan, an experienced architect and monument conservator, is ready to train students in this field. Other disciplines that deal with building culture at the university include monument preservation and historical urban planning. These academic programs support the implementation of the approaches and philosophies discussed in the colloquium in practice, as is explained in more detail on the university's website hs-rm.de.

In summary, it can be said that the building culture in Brandenburg is strengthened through close cooperation between politics, science and society. Initiatives such as the support association and the Baukultur network are proving to be important supports for the future-oriented development of the built environment. This impressively shows how sustainably our cultural heritage can be dealt with.
