Drama on the balcony: was it suicide or a violent crime?”

A new scandal is gripping the public and shining a bright light on issues such as violence and toxic relationships. On September 22, 2025, 34-year-old Tobias Löhne fell from his apartment. It remains unclear whether it was a suicide or whether he was overthrown. Investigators found fresh traces of a second person in his apartment, which only increases the questions about his sudden death. In addition, Tobias was recently fired by his boss, Jannik Frisch, because he had booked trips for himself and various companions through the travel agency and had shown negative behavior. These circumstances suggest that there were deeper conflicts that may have led to his downfall, as ZDF reports.

A neighbor, Franziska Wörner, suspects that a broken love relationship may have played a role. Tobias' ex-girlfriend, Claire Hoffmann, denied any loud arguments, but admitted that Tobias had broken up with her three weeks earlier. Whether this was related to another woman remains unclear. To make matters worse, there are also anonymous tips to the tax office that implicate Jannik Frisch of tax crimes. Tobias may have played a role here too, which brings the possibility of revenge into play.

Shortly after the tragedy: a shadow of violence

Just a little later, in August 2024, a shocking incident occurred in Hamburg: Deborah R. jumped from the balcony out of fear of her boyfriend Anouar B. and died. He is accused of previously brutally attacking her by pulling out her hair and injuring her with a bread knife. A neighbor alerted the emergency doctor, but any help came too late for Deborah. She had told the neighbor that Anouar wanted to kill her. While the court ultimately sentenced Anouar to seven years in prison, these events show a worrying side to relationships that end in violence, as RTL describes in its report.

Both incidents raise questions about how often intimate partner violence occurs and what steps can be taken to prevent it. The latest police crime statistics for 2024 show that violent crime has increased by 1.5% to its highest level since 2007. What is particularly worrying is the 11.3% increase in suspected children and 3.8% in young people. With an increasing number of cases involving violence and toxic relationships, we are seeing an alarming development in our society. The BKA points out that sexual crimes in particular have increased by 9.3% and that non-German suspects also play a role in many of these cases.

The disturbing trend in statistics and the tragic stories of Tobias and Deborah highlight the need to raise awareness of relationship violence and strengthen prevention measures. Everyone should have the right to a life free of violence - there is really something to be said for that.
