Together against loneliness: Workshops in Potsdam start tomorrow!

The project “Encourage! Get involved!” starts in Potsdam tomorrow, November 5th, and is aimed at all generations under the umbrella of the proWissen association. The initiative aims to counteract loneliness and social isolation, which are particularly common during the dark season. In collaboration with four meeting places in the city - including theMeeting house in Waldstadtand thatCommunity center at Schlaatz– a total of four workshops will take place, each lasting around three hours and covering different subject areas.

The workshops are a colorful mix of music, movement, art and psychological approaches. Participants can look forward to a group of up to twelve people, which creates an intimate atmosphere and promotes exchange. Both one-off and multiple participation are possible, and a hot lunch is served after each workshop, underlining the social aspect of the project. This commitment is part of the Potsdam Cultural Winter and is supported by the city administration. Those interested can contact by email mut@prowissenpotsdam.de or register by phone at (0331) 977 4592.

Loneliness: An issue in many cities

Loneliness is a widespread phenomenon in Germany, and it is not only in Potsdam that people are actively fighting against it. On a digital map from the Competence Network for Loneliness (KNE) you can now find around 1,000 offers that primarily serve to prevent and provide support in dealing with loneliness. These offers range from shared walks and cultural experiences to learning opportunities and conversations. The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth supports the work of the KNE and thus ensures that help can be found more quickly. The map aims to create low-threshold access to communities and initiate exchanges about prevention and intervention.

Karin Prien, the Minister of Education, emphasizes that loneliness is not only an individual problem, but also a social problem. It endangers not only the well-being of individuals, but also democracy as a whole. The KNE has set itself the task of exploring the causes and consequences of loneliness and pooling knowledge in order to translate it into political practice. Initiatives and projects can register on the KNE website, which leads to networking and strengthening of the offerings.

These efforts, such as those undertaken by proWissen in Potsdam and the KNE at the national level, show that there are many ways to counteract loneliness. It remains to be hoped that such initiatives will help more people to make social contacts and overcome their isolation.

You can find more information about the Potsdam project on the website Daily Mirror and about the nationwide offers on the website Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
