Inclusion Rally in Potsdam: Barrier Challenge inspires companies!
What is happening in Potsdam when it comes to the topic of inclusion? The coming months will be all about accessibility, with the Potsdam Community Foundation launching an exciting training course. The event with the illustrious name “Barrier Challenge” is aimed at companies and organizations. The focus: How can the reality of life of people with disabilities in our city be better perceived and taken into account?
The challenge starts in September. During weekly explorations through Potsdam, the participating teams have the task of looking at the cityscape from the perspective of people with disabilities. The focus is on topics that often fade into the background, such as: stepped entrances for people in wheelchairs or the lack of information in Braille and plain language. Improving access to doctor's offices is also an important issue that is in focus.
A symbol of diversity
The overarching goal of the barrier challenge is to increase awareness of accessibility and set an example for diversity. The various teams will present their findings at the final event, scheduled for October 10th. An awards ceremony will be the culmination of the challenge, honoring the participants' commitment. Anyone who would like to take part can now send an email to barrierbusters@potsdamer-buergerstiftung.org register. The participation fee is 300 euros per team and includes training, materials and public relations.
But why is this actually so important? Social participation and the opportunity to move in the digital world are crucial for people with disabilities. According to one Study by Aktion Mensch Digital participation is increasingly seen as part of social participation. “Participation” means that everyone can make full use of society’s infrastructure and offerings. However, many barriers remain, especially on the internet, where people with disabilities continue to face hurdles.
Digital challenges and legal requirements
The trend towards digitalization brings with it both opportunities and risks. The trend study carried out in 2019 by the SINUS Institute on behalf of Aktion Mensch clearly shows that despite increasing digitalization, many people with disabilities continue to have difficulties using digital offerings. From June 2025, private sector providers will even be obliged to make their online offerings barrier-free - an important development, but whether that will be enough remains to be seen.
Overall, the barrier challenge is an important step towards an inclusive society. Everyone can help break down barriers and raise awareness of the needs of people with disabilities. Let's work together to ensure that diversity in our city doesn't just remain a word, but is lived!
