Classical music at Weberplatz: Experience Beatles hits and baroque music live!

On July 10, 2025, the Thalia cinema in Cologne will become a hotspot for music lovers: from 6 p.m., not only delicious sandwiches and gin and tonic will be served there, but also the film screening of “The Beatles – Get Back” at 7 p.m. The event is dedicated to celebrating English music and is part of a series of events taking place over the coming days, such as Meeting point Potsdam reported.

But it doesn't just stop at the documentary about the legendary Fab Four. On the following Friday, July 11th, visitors can look forward to a concert by the Berlin Chamber Soloists. From 8 p.m., important English baroque music by Handel and Purcell will be performed, including the piece “Music for a While” by Purcell and the Concerto grosso No. 6 by Handel.

A music weekend in a class of its own

On Saturday, July 12th, a “Beatlemania Zone” will take place on Weberplatz from 8:30 p.m. Both the Collegium musicum Potsdam and the revival band Pangea will be on stage here and perform Beatles classics such as “Blackbird”, “Let it Be” and “Eleanor Rigby”. Anyone who is enthusiastic about the Beatles will get their money's worth here. The band's popular hits also include "Get Back", a song that was not only heard live, but also in their iconic 1969 rooftop performance on the roof of the Apple Theater in London [like Wikipedia reported].

For families there is a program specially designed for children on Sunday, July 13th: from 4 p.m. the Grimm fairy tale “Jorinde and Joringel” will be performed by the Erxleben dance company. This performance is accompanied by the Georg-Friedrich-Händel Chamber Orchestra from Berlin with Stravinsky's “Pulcinella”.

Cultural currents and significant connections

The Beatles not only shaped generations with their music, but also fundamentally changed American pop culture. Their arrival in the United States on February 7, 1964 is considered the beginning of the “British Invasion,” which revolutionized the music scene SRF highlights].

During this time, thousands of teenagers, especially young women, came to JFK Airport to see the band. Walter Cronkite even referred to the arrival as the “British Invasion,” which became synonymous with the cultural upheaval that British music brought with it. This was not only a musical wave, but it also led to changes in clothing styles and youth culture on both sides of the Atlantic.

Admission to the concerts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is free, but donations are welcome. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own seating as space on site is limited. And even in bad weather, no one has to miss out on the performances: the concerts take place in the nave of the Friedrichskirche and are broadcast live on Weberplatz.

Be there next weekend when Cologne celebrates the heritage of English music and the nostalgia of the Beatles blossoms!
