Little programmers: Telling stories with BeeBots in Potsdam!

An exciting event for parents and their little ones will take place in the main library in Potsdam on August 28, 2025. Under the title “Telling Stories with Bee-Bots,” families are invited to playfully explore the programming of robots. The event is aimed specifically at children between the ages of 4 and 6 and is intended to give them initial access to digital media. The focus here is on small programmable robots, the so-called Bee-Bots. A particularly nice aspect: no previous knowledge is required, so anyone can actually take part. The goal is to create stories together and control the robots, while at the same time the children learn in a playful way how digital media works. According to [Potsdam.de](https://www.potsdam.de/de/ Veranstaltung/ausgebucht-medienstart-historie-erzaehlen-mit-bee-bots-0), participation is free, but prior registration is mandatory for all participants, parents and grandparents.

Such events are of great importance because they not only arouse interest in technology, but also promote children's media literacy. It is important that media education begins in early childhood. Early media education functions as an educational task in daycare centers, where children learn to use media inclinations and potential for themselves and at the same time to deal with them critically. A report by bpb.de states that there is often a lack of practical implementation. Many of the institutions are lagging behind when it comes to integrating digital media into everyday education. One reason for this is the media education habitus of many educators and different focuses in the curricula.

Media literacy for the youngest

In our digital world, it is more important than ever that children are introduced to the correct use of media in daycare. Apparently only a few digital media are actually actively used with children in early childhood media education. According to the “miniKIM 2020” study, only 5% of daycare centers use tablets when working with the little ones, while traditional media such as CD players still play the main role. This clearly shows that there is a great need for professional training opportunities for educators in order to be able to integrate media skills more effectively.

Registration for the “Telling Stories with Bee-Bots” event is already possible. It's worth taking the opportunity to introduce children to the exciting world of digital media. It's a fantastic opportunity to combine creative storytelling with technical know-how, laying the foundation for a reflective engagement with media. Such events are a step in the right direction to give today's young learners the skills they need for the digital future.
