New school building in Potsdam: Innovative learning at Pirschheide!
Something is happening in the education sector in Potsdam! The new school building at Pirschheide was ceremoniously handed over today. Torsten Wiegel, the representative for education, and Bert Nicke, managing director of ProPotsdam, were on site and emphasized the importance of a modern school landscape. From the next school year, the Potsdam “Friedrich Ludwig Jahn” sports school will benefit from the new premises. Potsdam.de reports that the building on the airship port site has been extensively renovated and modernized and is now designed with 442 container modules in a U-shape and around a green schoolyard.
The construction of the school took around nine months, which is a remarkable achievement given its dimensions - the building has space for 900 students. ProPotsdam has created 120 flexible rooms on over 7,000 square meters: from classrooms to teacher and specialist rooms to spacious rooms for all-day activities. Dr. Iris Gerloff, the headmistress of the sports school, emphasizes that learning continued seamlessly during the construction work and no time was lost.
A well thought out concept
In the new school building, the specialist rooms and classrooms are generously planned with 70 m² each and are modernly equipped, including smart boards and network connections for modern digital education. The indoor climate was also optimized using a modern heat pump system. With 315 windows equipped with controllable blinds, students also enjoy pleasant sun protection. The outdoor area offers extensive bicycle parking and parking spaces, which makes travel easier for many students. rbb24 points out that this new building is planned as an alternative location for the sports school, as the existing building is also being renovated.
The school construction is part of a comprehensive plan by the city of Potsdam to meet the growing need for school places. In the coming years, the Montessori high school and the Voltaire comprehensive school will also be modernized. Two new high schools are intended to further enrich the school landscape in Potsdam, one in the Brunnenviertel, which opened in the summer of 2024, and one in the north of Potsdam, which is scheduled to start as a primary school in the summer of 2025. The city is investing in the future of its schools to ensure modern education.
The future of school building
The new school on Pirschheide is a good example of how modern school buildings have to be designed in order to meet the requirements of all-day operation. Alho highlights that many existing school buildings date from the 1970s and are often not optimized for today's requirements. It is clear here that there is a need for action – be it because of inclusion, digitalization or the need to take in more students. The city's initiatives show that Potsdam is ready to invest in the education of future generations.
In total, the investments for the new school building on Pirschheide amount to an impressive 24 million euros. After being used by the sports school, the building will also serve as an alternative location for other schools. The city not only ensures modern teaching, but also sets a strong example for the educational landscape in Potsdam - this is where the future of school construction becomes tangible!
