Parking situation in Babelsberg: New ID rules from June 30th!

Things will soon get serious for all residents in Babelsberg: From June 30th, new resident parking zones will be set up in parts of the popular district. But the path to getting a parking permit is anything but clear. As Tagesspiegel reports, the required parking permits can be applied for online, but only after the required street signs have been set up. However, there is no clear regulation for short-term parking spaces in the meantime, which puts residents in an uncertain position.

The application itself is straightforward: one vehicle can be registered per person, and the ID cards are conveniently sent by email. However, the first collection dates are only available from July 8th, so residents who want to park after June 30th could potentially fall into the “ticket trap” - without a parking permit and uncertain about what fines they will face.

The cost of resident parking

Another aspect that is causing discussion are the fees for resident parking spaces. From the second half of 2025, these will be increased dramatically. As RBB24 reports, the price for an annual parking permit has risen from previously 30 euros to an incredible 145 euros. A two-year parking permit even costs 275 euros. This price increase is the first adjustment since 1993 and is accompanied by a legal adjustment to the Road Traffic Act from 2020.

However, there is financial relief, especially for people with a severely disabled person's certificate: the fee is reduced by 50 percent upon presentation of appropriate proof. Another point that can provide important information about collecting the ID card is the required documents that must be presented at the citizen service center. This includes, among other things, the identity card and the registration certificate of the vehicle. The city has compiled further details on its website.

Political developments and changes

Aside from resident parking, there are also politically exciting developments in Potsdam: Severin Fischer is being proposed as mayoral candidate by the SPD for the new election on September 21st. Fischer, who currently works as State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises in the Berlin Senate Department, is expected to represent the party in the vote on July 5th. Another political heavyweight is Wilfried Peters, who is appointed as the new head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Brandenburg. Citizens can not only deal with the parking permits, but can also look forward to developments in the political area.

So stay tuned to see how the situation surrounding resident parking in Babelsberg develops. Whether the new regulations will cause less stress or create additional uncertainty remains to be seen.
