Potsdam is discussing climate-neutral heat supply – find out now!
What is happening in Potsdam? On July 8th, the city invites all interested citizens to a public information event about the planned climate-neutral heat supply. This will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Potsdam Museum, in the Great Hall. Here, residents can not only find out what measures are planned to improve heat supply, but can also actively participate in the discussion. Admission is free and registration is not required, making participation easier for everyone. Loud Meeting point Potsdam The focus is on developing suitable areas for the expansion of district and local heating networks as well as on decentralized solutions, such as heat pumps.
A central goal of this initiative is to replace fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives. Currently around 38% of the CO₂ emissions in Potsdam come from heating. Adapted heat planning can help to significantly reduce these values and thus ensure a clean, future-proof energy supply. The municipality plans to increase the proportion of heat supply covered by district and local heating networks from the current 45% to around 63% in the future.
Climate protection through municipal heat planning
Heat supply is an important factor in Germany: it accounts for more than 50% of national energy consumption and is a main driver of CO₂ emissions. Loud Federal Environment Agency The implementation of a greenhouse gas-neutral heat supply by 2045 is crucial for reducing climate-damaging emissions. The operation of buildings is responsible for around 35% of final energy consumption. This is more than just a reason to look into the issue of heat supply!
An important instrument for dividing tasks and increasing efficiency is municipal heat planning. This not only gives building owners clear guidance, but also ensures that the conversion to renewable energies is carried out in a planned and coordinated manner. From January 1, 2024, all federal states are obliged to create heat plans in order to coordinate municipal infrastructure and achieve climate-friendly heat supply reports the BBSR.
Together into the future
Another important point is the responsibility of municipalities in implementing the heat transition. In Germany, 42% of municipalities are already actively working on drawing up their heat plans. This shows that there is great interest in the topic. Municipalities are particularly in demand in North Rhine-Westphalia: 396 have to complete their heat plans by mid-2026.
Political framework conditions also play a crucial role - measures are required here that promote climate-friendly action. Innovative processes and energy-saving renovations increase efficiency and reduce emissions. Digitalization is becoming increasingly important in order to effectively analyze consumption data and optimize energy use.
The challenges are great, but the opportunities to advance climate-friendly heat supply are diverse. Take advantage of the opportunity and find out about the exciting developments in your city at the Potsdam Museum on July 8th. Together we can make an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and make Potsdam a pioneer in sustainable heat supply.
