Potsdam celebrates: New municipal swimming pool in the UNESCO Park opens on July 5th!
A very special chapter will open in Potsdam on July 5, 2025: After almost two years of construction, the newly designed Park Babelsberg public pool will open its doors. The city pool, which is located in the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage landscape on the banks of the Tiefen See, was revitalized with the aim of harmoniously combining sustainability, accessibility and monument protection. The official handover of the keys to the Potsdam bathing area and the Potsdamer Seesportclub has already taken place, and the anticipation for the opening could not be greater. For everyone who didn't know, the city pool is part of the comprehensive modernization of Potsdam's beach and indoor pools, which has been in full swing since 2005, as entwicklungsstadt.de reports.
The total area of the magnificent park is around 114 hectares and is a true jewel that was designed by the famous garden artists Lenné and Fürst Pückler-Muskau. The hilly landscape offers breathtaking views of the Tiefen See, the Glienicke Bridge and the Hans Otto Theater. Historical buildings such as Babelsberg Castle and the Small Castle give the area additional flair. And don't worry, motorized vehicles are not allowed in the park, so access is easy on foot, by bike or on inline skates, as swp-potsdam.de describes.
Modernity meets tradition
The new Park Babelsberg public pool replaces the earlier, barrack-like buildings and fits perfectly into the beautiful landscape. Historical elements such as the climbing arch and the flower bowls from GDR times have been lovingly preserved. Visitors can also expect a focus on sustainability through modern technical equipment, which includes wooden construction, a green roof and the use of solar energy and geothermal energy. The construction costs amount to around 9 million euros, of which 1.6 million euros were funded by a federal program, as entwicklungsstadt.de makes clear.
The Stadtwerke Potsdam, as the client, sees this project as a milestone. In addition, the historic carriage path “Drive” was restored as part of a property swap, which gives the city pool additional historical charm. Another plus point are the new sanitary facilities as well as barrier-free paths and changing rooms, which are intended to make it easier for all visitors to enjoy their stay.
Opening details
The opening on July 5th will be celebrated with an open day and free entry. These celebrations mark the 20th anniversary of the Potsdam spa area - one more reason to properly celebrate the new facilities! Integration of the Potsdam Sea Sports Club is also an important part of the project: members have access to modern club rooms, changing rooms and workshops in an environment that meets today's demands.
By making this bathroom sustainable and inclusive, it appeals to visitors of all ages. It is part of the special cultural landscape, which is also characterized by the Potsdam palaces and gardens, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 and are protected because of their uniqueness and their artistic influence on art history. The Stadtbad Park Babelsberg will undoubtedly be an enrichment for Potsdam's leisure and sports offerings, a place where tradition meets modernity - in the middle of the picturesque surroundings, which cover more than 2,064 hectares, as potsdam.de documents.
