Potsdam is planning the future: Krampnitz will become a model neighborhood for everyone!
The city of Potsdam is setting an example for the future with the urban development project in Krampnitz. In one of the largest construction projects in Brandenburg, a modern urban district is being developed on 140 hectares that will offer space for around 4,900 apartments. Up to 10,000 people should be able to live here in the future. An important milestone was celebrated just a few days ago with the district festival and a press tour on June 14, 2023, during which the public was given its first glimpse of the renovated infrastructure. The focus was on the new apartments, the elementary school and traffic planning, as entwicklungsstadt.de reports.
The first construction phase provides for the completion of 186 rental apartments in listed buildings, which should be ready for occupancy by the end of 2025. These will be rented out by Vonovia, while the developer BUWOG plans to create around 1,500 rental and condominium apartments, including subsidized apartments. The entire project has a total investment of around one billion euros and will be implemented over a period of 10 to 15 years, so that an attractive living environment will develop here in the long term.
Sustainability and infrastructure
What makes Krampnitz so special? The city developers have placed a strong focus on sustainability. The heat supply is based on geothermal energy, heat pumps and photovoltaics. The aim is to create a CO₂-neutral district. This also includes a traffic concept that focuses on a car-free design by prioritizing pedestrian and cycle paths. From August 2025, bus routes are planned that will connect the district with the tram connection on the Jungfernsee campus, while a direct tram connection is to be implemented by 2029.
The social infrastructure will also not be neglected. In addition to daycare centers and a primary school, a high school and a district center are also being planned. Up to 3,000 jobs can be created through the new commercial space and infrastructure projects in Krampnitz. This makes the neighborhood not only a place to live, but also an employer for many citizens.
The vision of Krampnitz
But what is behind this ambitious planning? According to krampnitz.de, an innovative and sustainable urban district is being created in Krampnitz that is accessible to broad sections of the population. A wide range of offers, from rental and condominiums to building groups and cooperatives to social housing, help ensure that all generations can feel comfortable here. The focus is on well-thought-out urban development that focuses on mobility and energy supply.
The Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) also emphasizes that the development of new urban districts can help relieve strained housing markets, especially in dynamic metropolitan areas such as Potsdam. With careful planning in Krampnitz, a future-oriented concept is being pursued that both creates living space and improves the quality of life. The analysis shows that large-scale developments such as these are becoming increasingly important, especially at a time when the discrepancy between supply and demand in the housing market is becoming ever greater. as documented by the BBSR.
Krampnitz is therefore not just a new building project, but an example of forward-looking urban planning. It will be interesting to see how the neighborhood will develop in the coming years and what changes it will bring to the residents.
