Salzbrunn celebrates tradition: Equestrian festival unites generations and communities!

In the small town of Salzbrunn, which together with Birkhorst has a population of 187, village life pulsates in a very special way. The committed local mayor Aline Fründt, who has been in office since 2019, and her team, supported by Simone Schulze and Ireen Schick on the local advisory board, have preserved and recreated much of what makes the village so unique.

A real growth engine for the interaction between generations are the multi-generational houses, which do not just function as simple meeting places. According to Caritas, they promote social cohesion and are an important element in meeting the challenges of demographic change. It can be said that the village has a good knack for integrating these houses into the heart of the community and making them accessible to all ages.

The heart of the village

The central point of contact in Salzbrunn is the village community center with its playground. A wide variety of events take place here that not only promote togetherness, but also exchange between young and old. The youngest resident is only two years old, while the oldest will soon be celebrating her 97th birthday. Many children have stayed in the village or returned, founded their own families and thus ensure that the village community remains vibrant.

The village’s motto “Small but mighty!” gets to the point. Despite the small population, Salzbrunn has a lot to offer: an equestrian festival and the church are just some of the highlights that attract visitors. The idyllic landscape invites you to visit the Way of St. James, which winds through the region. A wish that is close to Aline Fründt and the residents' hearts is to preserve this small town character and to ensure that children in particular feel comfortable.

Challenges and opportunities

The community is proud of what it has achieved through initiative, but also faces challenges. The road conditions in the direction of Schäpe and Birkhorst are considered the biggest problem that urgently needs to be solved. Nevertheless, residents are feeling an uptick in the arrival of new neighbors. Immigration, not least through changes in the neighborhood, gives the place new impetus and expands the social spectrum.

The development is not only a benefit to the existence of the buildings and facilities; it also contributes to maintaining the social fabric. As the Bertelsmann Foundation shows, demographic change is a decisive factor that influences the age structure in cities and communities. This is why multi-generational houses have a special role to play. They offer the opportunity to connect generations and take an active part in social life.

The members of the village community know that volunteering is a matter of the heart that cannot be measured in hours. So it is not surprising that the residents of Salzbrunn follow a common vision: maintaining traditions and creating an environment in which all generations can connect and feel comfortable.

Cohesion is strong in Salzbrunn, and the residents have the reins in their hands to continue making their small village a place of coexistence and joy. Because despite all the challenges, the focus here is clearly on the future - the small community wants to grow and flourish without losing its charm.
