Uninvited guests: Burglary in Potsdam commercial premises!

In the early morning hours of September 9, 2025, there was a break-in in the commercial premises of the train station arcades in Potsdam. At around 1:15 a.m., six young perpetrators broke open the front door and made off with several cell phones and computer technology. The escape direction led towards Nuthepark, but the subsequent police search in the area was unsuccessful. The preliminary damage is estimated at around 10,000 euros.

The criminal police launched an appeal after the incident and are asking the public for any relevant information about the perpetrators or observations that could help solve this crime. Citizens are encouraged to report any relevant information to the Potsdam Police Department on 0331 5508-0 or any other police station. Such break-ins have become a worrying problem in Germany in recent years.

Burglary numbers in Germany are increasing

Current statistics show that burglaries have increased dramatically in Germany. According to police crime statistics for 2023, around 77,800 burglaries were recorded, an alarming increase of 181 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly relevant is that most of these burglaries occur during the daylight hours between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., with the risk particularly increasing in the fall and winter months when it gets dark earlier.

Urban areas, as well as metropolises, are more affected than rural regions. It is therefore even more important to take appropriate protective measures. Experts recommend mechanical security in the form of burglary-resistant windows and doors as well as modern security technology such as alarm systems and video surveillance systems. Almost every second burglary attempt fails because perpetrators take too long to get into a building.

What can citizens do?

Prevention measures are crucial to protect yourself against break-ins. Investing in security systems proves to be worthwhile in the long term. An alarm system can ensure that immediate action can be taken in the event of an emergency. The importance of such measures is repeatedly emphasized not only by police statistics, but also by experts.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and learn about possible security solutions. Awareness of one's own safety could not only prevent break-ins, but also contribute to the general fight against crime in the region. Information on this can also be found in reports from the GDV and the BKA police crime statistics. In the event of an emergency, citizens of Potsdam can use the emergency numbers 110 for police and 112 for emergency services to get help quickly.

The Märkische Allgemeine information portal is still available for current reports on accidents, closures and crimes in the region. Raising awareness of security risks and acting accordingly is important now more than ever.
