A14 construction in Prignitz: financing crisis threatens important route!
The further construction of the A14 motorway in Prignitz is in jeopardy. This has far-reaching consequences for the region and transport connections in Germany. Loud Uckermark courier Not only are the sections between Seehausen in der Altmark and Wittenberge affected, but new financing problems have also arisen for the section from Wittenberge to Karstädt. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) early on denounced a gap in the infrastructure budget of at least 5.5 billion euros by 2029. This situation is also reflected in the uncertainty for further construction projects between Osterburg and Seehausen-Nord as well as Dahlenwarsleben and Wolmirstedt.
District Administrator Christian Müller (SPD) puts it in a nutshell: The unclear financial situation leads to an unsatisfactory situation. “There is a risk of an unfinished route,” he warns and has already held discussions with various ministries and government representatives (including the Ministry of Finance). In order to support the discussion about the A14, Müller also contacted the prime ministers of neighboring countries. “We have to have a good hand here,” said Müller in a recent statement.
Financing problems and construction stop
The problems become even more serious: how MDR reported that there was a threat of a halt to construction of the A14 due to a lack of financial resources. The funding requirement of 670 million euros ends up on the agenda of the German Unity Trunk Road Planning and Construction GmbH (Deges). This warned in an incendiary letter that the funds could be used up by August, which could lead to interruptions in the ongoing work. “The situation is alarming for many construction companies,” says Burghard Grupe, managing director of the Magdeburg Chamber of Crafts.
However, the likelihood of a construction halt has so far been averted. The main construction work for the section between Wittenberge and Karstädt is planned for 2027. These construction measures would be a major achievement as they would close the largest gap in the German motorway network and improve connections to the Baltic Sea ports. “The project is of great importance for the entire region,” emphasizes Brandenburg’s Infrastructure Minister Detlef Tabbert.
The path to more financing
In order to solve the ongoing problems with the financing of federal highways, a special fund totaling 500 billion euros was decided, as stated on the official website Federal Ministry of Transport is to be read. This should be used in particular to maintain the existing routes in the federal network. Since 2005, trucks have been paying a toll to contribute to the financing, but the funds are not yet flowing sufficiently from the special fund.
In March, the Bundestag passed amendments to the Basic Law to finance infrastructure projects, which gives hope for financial replenishment. But where is the windfall? Funds must be made available in a timely manner to ensure ongoing projects, including the A14, do not come to a standstill. “We have to set the course for the future,” demands Müller and appeals to those responsible to act now.
A total of around 45 kilometers of the 155 kilometer long A14 route is up for grabs. This uncertainty is not only putting the construction sites to the test, but also the quality of life in the region. The towns in this catchment area are hoping for quick solutions to be directly connected to the German and European highway network.
