Goodbye meat center: 150 jobs in Perleberg at risk!

Shock waves from the closure of the meat center

In Perleberg, the largest town in Prignitz, the meat center is on the verge of extinction. On November 4, 2025, it was announced that the largest slaughterhouse in Brandenburg would be closed. This decision not only directly affects the 150 employees, but also has a profound impact on agriculture and the economy in the region. Managing director Ringo Beinroth informed District Administrator Christian Müller about the tragic news. The district is now examining the consequences and looking for solutions for the affected employees. Both the state and the district have announced that they will closely monitor the development in order to quickly take appropriate measures.

City budget and investments

The city of Perleberg is planning a loss of 178,250 euros in its budget for 2026. Despite this financial challenge, the city wants to invest in building a new fire station and is taking out a loan of over 5.1 million euros for this purpose. A total of 8.65 million euros are planned for investments, which not only include the construction of the fire station, but also the renovation of streets, daycare centers and the improvement of the city center. The draft budget will be discussed in the committees from November 4th, and the final decision will be made on December 4th.

Interestingly, the Neue Hennings Hof in Perleberg is looking for trainees from Vietnam. Due to a decline in applicants in the region, 58 training positions are currently unfilled. The employment agency attributes this to the falling birth rate. In the last three years, around 30 Vietnamese trainees have started or completed their training there. This could represent a valuable opportunity for the city to counter demographic change.

Christmas markets in Prignitz

Preparations for the upcoming Christmas markets in Prignitz are taking place under difficult conditions. Rising costs and a lack of dealers are making it difficult for cities like Pritzwalk, Wittenberge and Perleberg. Nevertheless, they are sticking to their markets - albeit with adapted programs and sometimes shortened durations. In order to secure the markets in the future, cities and associations are looking for new exhibitors and cooperation partners at an early stage.

Back to the festivities celebrated in other regions: At the Hofbrauhaus Buffalo in the USA there was a lot of Christmas spirit on the Buffalo Bills game day. Fans gathered in bars and restaurants not only to watch the game but also to celebrate together. Ed Arnold, co-owner of the Hofbrauhaus, reported on a Christmas party where gift bags were distributed to local families. Despite a rainy weekend, many fans were able to enjoy a little break and their children's return from college - a nice memory during this festive period.

Security measures at events also play a role, as the celebrations at the Martinimarkt in Neuruppin prove. To ensure the safety of visitors, large concrete blocks were erected and access for emergency and rescue vehicles was also ensured. Such measures are necessary to increase security at events and maintain the attractiveness of the markets, while at the same time taking the current situation into account.

In summary, it can be said that Perleberg and the Prignitz are facing major challenges, but can also use new opportunities, such as attracting international trainees, to get the region back on track economically.
