Alarm at the swimming lake: More and more black snakes are being spotted in gardens!

The warm months of the year not only bring sunshine and blooming gardens, but also an unabated increase in snake sightings in Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, these reptiles are increasingly being spotted in gardens and around bathing lakes. The Northern Courier reports that black grass snakes in particular are causing a stir. These snakes swim well and are non-venomous and feel particularly comfortable in natural gardens and near water.

The increasing number of watering holes and ponds attracts numerous amphibians, which in turn attract predators such as grass snakes. These snakes are justified because they have a weak venom that is, however, completely harmless to humans. To ensure your own safety, it is recommended to keep a distance of at least two meters and remain calm if you encounter one of these snakes.

Melanistic grass snakes and their spread

The black grass snakes observed recently are the result of a gene mutation known as melanism. Loud RTL These snakes not only appear in cities such as Witten, Dortmund and Essen, but also spread into rural areas of the Bergisches Land and Sauerland. Originally native to southern Germany, the higher temperatures are also drawing more and more grass snakes to central Germany.

Although the sightings can bring a certain thrill, grass snakes are by no means aggressive. When threatened, they prefer to flee rather than attack. However, keepers and animal rights activists warn against improper handling of these reptiles. Injuring or even killing grass snakes can result in severe fines of up to 50,000 euros.

The living environment of native snakes

A look at the local snake species shows that it's not just grass snakes that can be found in our gardens. The adder, which is widespread in parts of southern Germany, is one of the few poisonous snakes whose bite is rarely fatal. These reptiles have a harmful venom that can attack organs. Recognizing them is easy thanks to the distinctive zigzag pattern on their back. The aspis viper, which only occurs in a few places in Germany, also has strong venom, but does not cause panic because it is not aggressive either.

One or two snake encounters can sharpen our perception of nature and raise awareness for the protection of these animals. It is important that sightings are reported to the German Nature Conservation Association (Nabu) or local reptile clubs.

In summary, the black grass snakes bring more than just a minute's fright. They are part of a healthy, natural garden and contribute to biodiversity. Anyone who encounters one of these shy creatures should be aware of one thing: keep their distance and stay calm - that is the key when dealing with our local reptiles.
