Gray mouse or strong heart? Goa is fighting for survival in the sanctuary!

The fifteen-month-old mixed-breed dog Goa lives at the Kolrep sanctuary, which was founded by Margit Preiß almost two decades ago. This once frightened dog has a tragic past that has resulted in not only physical but also psychological scars. Further information is available on this maz-online.de.

Goa, who arrived at the sanctuary nine years ago as a five- to six-month-old puppy, was struggling. The little dog was sedate with alcohol and drugs early in her life, which to this day has caused irreparable damage to her heart, liver and thyroid. These offenses were not without consequences, as Goa needs three different medications every day, which cost the Tapsi animal protection association over 1,500 euros annually.

Challenges for the animal protection association

The association's financial difficulties are due to the high cost of medication, while the food for the cats - over 25 live at the sanctuary, alongside seven dogs and a 25-year-old donkey named Jojo - is also not exactly cheap. The special food for the cats costs 80 euros per bag and is only enough for two weeks. The search for donations to ensure the care of the animals is all the more urgent. The association relies primarily on donations of money and food from supermarkets in the area.

  • Kosten für Goa: Medikamente über 1500 Euro jährlich.
  • Kosten für Katzenfutter: 80 Euro pro Sack, reicht für zwei Wochen.

Margit Preiss also has to think about the future. Due to their advanced age and financial constraints, the sanctuary can no longer accept new, especially young, animals. This further depresses the situation. Animal well-being in focus

Also interesting is the context of other animal species and their handling of psychoactive substances. There are many reports that reindeer have been observed by Siberian indigenous peoples becoming intoxicated when consuming “magic mushrooms” (fly agaric). Biologists suspect that these animals have a special ability to convert fly agaric ibotenic acid into a less toxic form called muscimal. This allows them to enjoy something that would be fatal to humans. Reports on this fascinating aspect of animal behavior spektrum.de.

Whether Goa would be suitable for hosting such experiments is more than questionable, as its traumas leave little scope for such “enjoyment”. One thing is certain: Kolrep Sanctuary does valuable work in animal protection and, above all, has the welfare of the animals in mind. Anyone who would like to help is warmly invited to support the Tapsi animal protection association and thus ensure a better future for the animals.
