Diverse celebrations in the region

On Friday, October 31st, we continue with open music making at the Perleberg Cultural Combine. Wittenberge is transformed into a spooky destination with big Halloween spectacles in the Prignitzer Badewelt, where entry to the Badewelt is offered at half price. There will also be a Halloween party in Karstädt on this day, where DJ Mayze and others will play.

Saturday, November 1st, also brings dance events such as the Landgasthof Schmidt in Cumlosen and a delightful Halloween party in Mellen. For those interested in culture, there is an exhibition and a city tour in Perleberg. The evening ends with a classical concert in the town hall. The alpaca ranch in Suckow also continues with a holiday program, including a campfire and mulled wine hike.

A festival with history

But what is actually behind this colorful hustle and bustle on Halloween? The origins of the festival are deeply rooted in Celtic traditions. The name Halloween goes back to “All Hallows Eve”, the evening before All Saints Day, which is celebrated on November 1st. Scientists believe that Halloween has its roots in the festival of Samhain, which marks the transition from harvest season to winter. That evening the gate to the “other world” opened and spirits were believed to wander. This custom only celebrated its triumph in the USA in the 19th century through Irish emigration, before it finally came back to Europe as a “re-importation”.

The custom has spread widely in Germany. Children go from house to house in costumes shouting “Trick or Treat,” while spending on Halloween items now totals hundreds of millions of euros – a little less than in the US, but still going strong. People in this country are now extremely creative when it comes to decorations and costumes.

Halloween is also celebrated in Prignitz in the American style, and the anticipation is great! Whether it's a spooky party or a convivial fire evening - the region has something to offer for every taste.
