Young family doctor enriches Wittenberge: New practice opened!
In Wittenberge there is reason to be happy: On July 2, 2025, 31-year-old Annemarie Hefekerl opened her own family practice. The practice is located in the new medical center in Rathausstraße 40/42 and becomes part of the health center of the Prignitz district hospital in Perleberg. The external design of the building was recently upgraded after the Wittenberge housing association invested around two million euros in the renovation. At the official inauguration, Mayor Oliver Hermann was enthusiastic about this improvement in the city's medical care, which is urgently needed, not least because of the general practitioner in the region.
Annemarie Hefekerl came up with the idea of opening her own practice three months ago when she found out that a family doctor was sought. When she started with her practice in June, she was already employed in the health center and had completed part of her training in the Prignitz district hospital. In her practice, she also treats children from the age of two. In order to be able to regulate the number of patients, however, an admission stop for children is currently being imposed. The decision to admit new patients is made monthly.
The challenge of the doctor's shortage
The opening of Hefekerl's practice is particularly gratifying because medical care in Wittenberg and the surrounding area is anything but rosy. Ulrike Scholler's family practice in Mühlanger, who has closed her practice since October 1st, is another example of the shortage of doctors. Many patients are fighting to find a new family doctor while some happy ones could stay in other practices. Mayor Peter Müller von Zahna-Elsters describes the situation as a serious problem. mz.de, that in Prettin, a neighboring town that has been critical of medical care for almost nine years.
A few young doctors work in Annaburg, where medical care is assessed in a survey with only 3.5 points. In surrounding cities like Jessen, health care is even perceived as "underground", which indicates long waiting times and difficulties when accessing specialists. Mayor Michael Jahn sees the problem as a circle matter and emphasizes that both legal requirements and financial support from health insurance companies would be necessary to improve the situation.
with fresh wind into the future
Despite these challenges, Annemarie Hefekerl remains optimistic. It brings a breath of fresh air to practice and attaches great importance to a relationship of trust with her patients. In her work, she supports a committed team of medical assistants, including Franzi, Melli and Melli D. Karsten Krüger from the hospital, already emphasized the cooperation to combat the long of the medical.
The opening of this new practice is an encouraging sign at a time when health care is increasingly under pressure. We can be excited to see how the situation around medical care will develop in Wittenberg and the surrounding area and what role Hefekerl's initiative will play.
