New truck stop in Karstädt: major project facing an uncertain future!

A major project is on hold in the municipality of Karstädt: the planned construction of a truck stop on the A14 had to be postponed indefinitely. The first investor, the Lohmann Group from Saxony-Anhalt, withdrew during the corona pandemic. Now the second investor, Hoyer SE, is also considering no longer pursuing the implementation of the project. Loud Northern Courier Hoyer paid a purchase price to the municipality in 2021 after it had previously bought the property back from Lohmann. A building permit was already available, but construction was scheduled to start in August 2023.

However, the situation around the planned truck stop is problematic. In May 2024, the construction project was postponed due to delays in the completion of the Karstädt motorway exit, which will not be completed until 2029 at the earliest. Press spokesman Thomas Hartmann von Hoyer stated that without this exit the construction of the truck stop would not be possible. Instead, the company is currently focusing on other locations where demand is greater, but remains in dialogue with local representatives. A withdrawal from the purchase contract cannot be ruled out by either side.

Planned infrastructure and requirements

The truck stop was to be built on a 1.8 hectare site and provide a wide range of services for travelers. Plans included, among other things, an underground tank farm with 300,000 liters, separate tank fields with four truck and six car lanes as well as parking spaces for 30 trucks and 24 cars. A car wash park with a car wash and four self-service car cleaning boxes as well as a restaurant area with 20 seats and outdoor dining were also part of the plans Märkische Allgemeine informed.

The plans also included modern charging options for electric vehicles and preparation for hydrogen and LNG. These preparations are important in the context of the current transport transition, as truck stops are more than just gas stations. According to that truck stop In the future, powerful fast charging stations for electric vehicles will have to be expanded to meet the requirements of modern traffic. There are currently over 1,100 charging points available at VEDA truck stops.

A look into the future

The developments surrounding the Autohof in Karstädt raise questions about the future of the project. Even if we return to the project, it remains unclear which requirements for fuel and vehicle propulsion could influence the planning. Hoyer will continue to monitor the political situation in order to make new decisions for the location if necessary. It remains to be seen whether Karstädt can flourish as a location for a truck stop in the future or whether the plans will have to be finally scrapped.
