Future of the railway: Wittenberge, Karstädt and Breddin are being modernized!
On August 1st there will be an exciting change in travel between Berlin and Hamburg: the general renovation of the railway line begins! This comprehensive work will take at least nine months and aims to transform eleven stations in Brandenburg into “train stations of the future”. A really important project that not only affects the train stations themselves, but is also intended to ensure more travel comfort here in the region. The Northern Courier reports that the redesigns will offer passengers better weather protection, modern seating and improved digital traveler information, among other things.
The Wittenberge, Karstädt and Breddin train stations are particularly in the focus of the renovations. But that's not all! The possibility of expanding into a train station of the future is also being examined in Bad Wilsnack and Glöwen during the closure period. This step would be a real benefit for the region, as the modernization work is scheduled to be completed by April 2026.
Redesign of the train stations
The Karstädt train station is being upgraded with urgent renovation measures. Here both platforms will be extended to an impressive 140 meters, while the route guidance will be renewed in a modern design. In addition, there is the conversion to energy-saving LED lighting and the purchase of new seating furniture as well as digital displays for up-to-date traveler information. However, an elevator is still missing, and the broken ticket machine no longer has to be tolerated either.
But Wittenberge is also undergoing a comprehensive facelift. A new regional and long-distance transport platform on track 6, which will be an incredible 435 meters long, is being built here. The pedestrian underpass will even be extended by 22 meters. In addition, the platforms on tracks 1 to 5 will be renewed to meet the needs of passengers. The costs for the renovation of the reception building are a whopping 22 million euros, which should be completed by 2026.
And what about Breddin? A barrier-free platform is being built on track 1, while further measures such as the renewal of the platform surface on track 2 and the stairs to the passenger underpass are on the agenda. New weatherproof houses and modern pathways will also soon shape the picture.
A nationwide project
In total, at least 20 of 28 stations on the route between Berlin and Hamburg are to be converted into future stations. The entire general renovation project includes over 180 kilometers of tracks and more than 200 switches - that's really impressive! The train stations on the Hamburg-Berlin route also benefit: Hamburg-Bergedorf, Schwarzenbek, Müssen and Büchen, among others, are being upgraded to future train stations, like the one German railway reported.
The vision behind these redesigns is clear: train stations should become an attractive attraction for travelers. The concept of the “train station of the future” aims to look at the facilities holistically. In the past, train stations were often viewed separately from their surroundings, which led to deficiencies in overall quality. A new, modern design that meets the needs of travelers - this not only creates more space, but also a pleasant ambience.
As part of the entire project, new radio masts will also be installed for the future FRMCS railway radio. This is a step towards a modern, connected future that should also create a better experience for travelers overall. The of DB InfraGO The plans outlined form a strong foundation to meet today's demands - around 20 million guests use train stations every day. So it's time to redesign these places of mobility!
