Quenz Bridge in Brandenburg: Safety problems and new construction on the doorstep?
Construction work on the replacement of the Quenz Bridge on the B1 federal highway in Brandenburg an der Havel is taking concrete shape. On July 9, 2025, a request for information was submitted under the Freedom of Information Act (IFG), which requests the current plans and the statement of the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) on the bridge. This is not just about the new building itself, but also about the road safety audits and the assessments by lawyers from the responsible authorities. What is particularly striking is the high frequency of accidents at the intersection since 2017, which indicates more serious injuries. Such problems must be minimized as part of the construction project.
At the same time, progress is being made in the construction of the bridge over the Deutsche Bahn AG tracks. State Secretary for Transport Dr. Ina Bartmann recently announced the change of traffic to the new partial structure. The total expected construction costs amount to around 44.6 million euros. Work on the first partial structure has progressed according to plan. Dr. Bartmann emphasized that every construction project also improves traffic safety, which is of great importance for citizens. The demolition of the second part of the structure will begin after it is opened to traffic and here, too, rapid progress is the focus of those responsible.
Construction schedule and planned measures
Construction work until the entire project is finally completed is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. In the current situation, traffic will temporarily remain routed over the new structure in one lane in each direction. However, this will change with the completion of the second half of the bridge, which will mean that there will be two lanes in each direction again.
For a better overview of the construction work and the planned schedule, the following steps and costs are listed:
- Gesamtkosten der Baumaßnahme: ca. 44,6 Millionen Euro
- Fertigstellung des Abrisses des zweiten Teilbauwerks: Ende des Monats
- Bau der neuen Erdbauarbeiten: Beginn nach Abriss
- Geplantes Ende der Bauarbeiten: 2. Quartal 2027
The vision for Brandenburg
Steffen Scheller, the mayor of Brandenburg an der Havel, underlines the progress as an important step for the city. “Every advance in our infrastructure is a benefit for the people here in Brandenburg,” said Scheller. These construction projects are sponsored by the federal government, the city and Deutsche Bahn AG, which once again emphasizes the importance of this measure.
In order to ensure the quality of the information, the applicant also asked for confirmation of receipt as part of his request. Experts expect that once the Quenz Bridge is finally completed, the entire transport infrastructure in the area will be significantly improved, which should have a positive impact on the entire region.
For citizens who would like to find out more about construction sites and other infrastructure projects, it is worth taking a look at the construction site information system of the State Road Administration, where all details and information are always up to date.
