New educational campus in Spremberg: groundbreaking ceremony for high school takes place!

With the groundbreaking ceremony on September 8, 2025 in Spremberg, a new chapter begins for the vocational high school (BOS). A new educational campus is being built on Wirthstrasse, which will not only significantly improve the quality of the school, but also make a decisive contribution to relieving the burden on the existing high school. A total of around 33.6 million euros will flow into the project, which will take around two years to complete. The overall planning also reflects the need to respond to the increasingly tense school situations in Germany.

Loud Niederlausitz Current The new building is located directly next to the listed clinker brick building and will consist of a square building with up to three floors. In addition to the three-field sports hall and the numerous specialist rooms, a cafeteria with a light-flooded atrium is also planned, which will serve as a central place for the students to stay.

The educational campus as a model for the future

In Spremberg, 420 students are currently studying at the BOS, although only 300 places are available. This means that around 100 students in grade 7 have to be taught in an external special school. The new campus, which also includes partners such as the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and the Spree-Neiße job center, aims to promote democratic education and equip schools for the challenges of the future. This is supported by the creation of 20 new specialist and work rooms, a sports hall and a modern cafeteria area, such as rbb24 informed.

The foundation stone for the new school will be laid in October 2025, with completion targeted for September 2027. These infrastructure measures are not only necessary to meet the increased number of students, but also to counteract the inadequacy of many existing school buildings. In Germany, it is not surprising that the investment backlog in education has reached a record 54.8 billion euros, according to a report by Architecture SHEET shows.

Planned infrastructure and challenges

The condition of many schools is alarming: crumbling walls, leaky windows and unhygienic toilets are commonplace in many regions. This misery is exacerbated by the increasing number of children and the expansion of inclusion. The construction of the new BOS in Spremberg is not only a local concern, but also a concern for society as a whole, especially in times when large cities are confronted with ever greater pressure on schools.

The creation of a modern educational campus can be a groundbreaking example for other municipalities to face the challenges in the education sector with a good hand. The investment backlog could be effectively combated in the future through a clever investment strategy and the use of modular construction methods.

An important step in the right direction is being taken in Spremberg, and there is great anticipation about the new premises. While the city and those involved - including Mayor Christine Herntier and Head of Education Michael Koch - are pushing ahead with the new building, it remains to be hoped that this is the beginning of a positive change in education policy.
