A worrying trend is spreading in Brandenburg: the number of right-wing extremist-motivated crimes rose sharply in the second quarter of 2023. Within just three months, the number of crimes in the area of “politically motivated crime – right-wing” rose from 796 to 870, which corresponds to an increase of almost 10%, reports Borken newspaper. The doubling of violent attacks is particularly alarming: instead of the 19 violent incidents in the first quarter, there were already 35 cases in the second quarter.
The violent attacks in Brandenburg are not an isolated case. In April, a Syrian truck driver was racially insulted and attacked in Potsdam. In May, a man in Fürstenwalde/Spree stabbed a foreigner in the face with a knife and bragged about it on WhatsApp. In June, a masked group in Cottbus rioted at a swimming lake by throwing bottles and setting off pyrotechnics. Over 500 offenses related to the distribution and use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Other offenses included sedition, insults and damage to property, records show.
A worrying increase
The total number of politically motivated crimes in Brandenburg amounted to 4,018 cases in 2023. This corresponds to a decrease of 8.4% compared to the previous year. But more than half of these cases, 2,475 to be precise, were attributed to right-wing extremism - an increase of 21% compared to 2022. This is in stark contrast to the efforts across society to reduce violence. Overall, the number of politically motivated acts of violence fell by 42%, indicating a decrease from 300 to 174 cases, reported rbb24.
The developments in politically motivated crime are particularly striking: While left-wing motivated crimes increased by 136% to 548 cases, the number of injuries in politically motivated violence remained sharply declining overall, but attacks against asylum policy increased. Political reactions and social consequences
In view of this worrying development, politicians such as SPD member of the state parliament Andreas Noack have called for hotspots of right-wing extremist violence to be identified at an early stage. The mayor of Spremberg, Christine Herntier, also expressed concern about the growing influence of right-wing extremists in her city. These voices make it clear that it is time to sound the alarm bells and take active action against this trend.
The increasing numbers of right-wing extremist crimes in Brandenburg show the need for a manageable political and social bottleneck to combat these tendencies.
