Decline in crimes in Brandenburg: Uckermark and Prignitz in plus!

There are mixed developments in the crime situation in Brandenburg. While the number of recorded crimes in the north of the country fell last year, the police crime statistics for the whole of Brandenburg reported a 9.4 percent increase in crimes. The decline is particularly noticeable in the Uckermark with 12.4 percent and in the Prignitz, where crimes were reduced by 6.0 percent. This information comes from the Potsdam Interior Ministry's responses to inquiries from CDU MPs, such as Northern Courier reported.

But not everything that glitters is gold. Rainer Genilke from the CDU draws attention to worrying trends, particularly the increase in vehicle thefts and politically motivated crime. And schools are not exempt either, as an increase in crimes has been noted in these institutions. Gordon Hoffmann from the CDU emphasizes that despite the positive development, the decline in crimes is encouraging, but that over 4,700 crimes in the affected regions are “too many”. He therefore calls for improved equipment and support for the police in order to increase the clearance rate.

A look at politically motivated crime

According to the federal government, the main reasons for the increasing numbers are the federal election and the conflict in the Middle East. What is particularly striking is the increase in right-wing extremist crimes, which have increased by almost 50 percent. This also includes an increasing number of anti-Semitic crimes, which have increased by 20 percent, and xenophobia, which has increased by 29 percent. A significant proportion of these incidents were also registered on the Internet, which further illustrates the extent of the problem, they said daily news.

Need for action recognized

Domestic politics reacted to this. Interior Minister Dobrindt announced a “security offensive” that includes, among other things, more powers for security authorities and an increase in the minimum sentence for attacks on law enforcement officers. In addition, a proposal for standard expulsion for anti-Semitic crimes committed by foreigners is being discussed, while knife attacks should in future be classified as crimes with an appropriate minimum sentence.

With an average of nine right-wing extremist attacks per day, the challenges for security policy in Germany are considerable. The dangers for minors, who are often the targets of such violence, are particularly alarming. It remains to be seen how the policy measures will affect the security of different population groups.
