In the picturesque new development area of Wünsdorf, Feo Brandt (40) and Sepp Schmidt (41) have realized their dream of owning their own wooden house. The two Berliners, who previously lived in different shared apartments, decided to build their own property in 2022. The idea came about two years earlier. This decision was not only based on the high rental prices in Berlin, which were sometimes between 1,000 and 2,000 euros, but also on personal circumstances: Feo was on sick leave due to a chronic illness and was looking for a new perspective.
With a budget of 300,000 euros, they looked for a suitable location for their dream. A renovation of an existing house was rejected due to possible toxins. Instead, they found the wooden house through the Fullwood company, and the contract was quickly signed. The search for property brought them luck: their first property corresponded to both the building plans and the budget of 100,000 euros. So they were able to start construction on February 28, 2022, when the materials were delivered.
Structural engineering challenges
However, the construction was not without challenges. Hurricane Zeynep caused a forced break by destroying the first own performances. Nevertheless, Feo and Sepp didn't let themselves get down. In a real construction marathon that lasted over a year, they worked on their own home, doing much of the work themselves. They called in professional help for electrical, plumbing and heating, which saved them time and stress.
They gained the knowledge they needed for construction through extensive internet research and watching YouTube videos on house building topics.
