Brandenburg's bathing waters: Mostly excellent, but caution is advised!

Brandenburg's bathing waters appear in a pleasing light this year: the water quality is predominantly “excellent”. According to n-tv, the current regulations from the bathing areas in the state of Brandenburg are good, with only a few exceptions. Swimming is not recommended in Angermünde on Lake Wolletzsee and in Alt Zeschdorf on Lake Hohenjesarscher due to possible blue-green algae mass development.

A comprehensive survey by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in Copenhagen shows the excellent water quality in most of Brandenburg's water bodies. Interestingly, there were only two bodies of water last year that were rated “poor”: a bathing area at Scharmützelsee in Bad Saarow and one on the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler waterway in Schwedt (Oder).

Bathing water in Germany in comparison

The figures on bathing water quality are also promising, as reported by the Federal Environment Agency: Of the 2,291 bathing waters examined in Germany, 98 percent meet the requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive. An astonishing 91 percent were given the top grade of “excellent”. This means that German citizens can look forward to clean water.

However, there were also some closures: 148 bathing waters were temporarily or completely closed for the season, 72 of which were due to cyanobacteria, better known as blue-green algae. This was particularly encouraged by meteorological events such as heavy rain, which led to hygiene concerns.

European standard and rush for the bathing season

Not only in Germany, but also in the Euro competition, Germany occupies a respectable place: According to Tagesschau, more than 90 percent of bathing waters are of excellent quality, which puts Germany ahead of countries like Italy and Spain. Of the almost 2,300 bodies of water tested, over 2,000 were graded “excellent”, meaning Germany takes eighth place in the EU-wide ranking. Cyprus leads the ranking, followed by Bulgaria and Greece, while Albania only has 16 percent of “excellent” waters.

The excellent result of the water quality is reflected in the current bathing season: The bathing areas around Potsdam almost exclusively have the “excellent” quality seal. Sun worshipers and swimmers in Brandenburg can hope for refreshing bathing fun.
