Mayoral election in Großbeeren: Who will be the new boss of the municipality?
On Sunday, July 6, 2025, the mayoral election will take place in Großbeeren, in which the citizens will elect a new city leader after Tobias Borstel (independent) was voted out. As the MAZ reported, the election date was brought forward after Borstel was voted out of office in a referendum in March. With currently 7,532 people eligible to vote in Großbeeren and a total population of 9,648 (as of April 2024), the community is expecting a lively voter turnout.
Voters can cast their votes at eight polling stations, which are open on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The RBB reports that around 1,500 applications for postal voting have already been received. Postal voters have the opportunity to hand in their ballot at the town hall until 6 p.m. on election Sunday, although a quorum of 15 percent or 1,130 votes is necessary for the election to be valid.
The candidates in the race
Five candidates have been nominated for the upcoming election:
- Martin Wonneberger (CDU)
- Dirk Steinhausen (WfG)
- Bettina Stobbe (Grüne)
- Klaus Meyer (UGDS)
- Peter Silke (AfD)
If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election will take place on July 20, 2025. This regulation could lead to exciting twists like this Political education in Brandenburg brilliantly summarized.
A significant say
In Großbeeren it is now possible for 16-year-olds to cast their vote for the first time. This reform brings a breath of fresh air to citizen participation and opens the doors for younger generations to become actively involved in local politics. In the future, voters will have the opportunity to cumulate or diversify their votes, which makes the voting decision even more individual.
The election will be accompanied by 77 volunteer election workers who will count the votes on Sunday. A live ticker from the MAZ will publish current reports and election results on election day so that no one misses anything.
Now it's time for the people of Großbeeren to keep their eyes open, because this election will set a decisive course for the future of the community. Who will win the trust of the citizens and direct the fate of the community? Only the votes of the voters can decide this!
