All-clear after forest fire: Jüterbog's military training area safe again!
In the early morning hours of July 3, 2025, a disturbing forest fire broke out at a former military training area near Jüterbog. But after intensive efforts by the fire brigade and the federal police, the all-clear can now be given. The extinguishing measures on the approximately 128 hectare fire site were successful and the Jüterbog fire department confirmed that the fire had been extinguished on Thursday daily news reported.
The surrounding drizzle, aided by the increased humidity, helped calm the situation. Although the fire brigade is no longer on duty, there remains a certain residual risk that embers could flare up again. Therefore, the head of operations and representatives of the Wilderness Foundation are planning to reassess the situation at midday.
About the fire
The forest fire initially broke out in an ammunition-contaminated area on Keilberg and spread quickly on Thursday night. An affected area of 40 hectares was originally reported, but the number increased to a total of 128 hectares. There was also information about high levels of smoke, leading authorities to warn of the dangers, such as n-tv reported. Due to the high ammunition load, the emergency services on the ground were unable to reach the sources of the fire directly.
The use of a federal police transport helicopter of the “Super Puma” type was therefore crucial. This carried out 42 approaches and brought a total of 75,600 liters of fire-fighting water into play. It is noteworthy that fires have repeatedly raged in this region in recent years, the largest of which was in 2019 with almost 750 hectares and another major fire in 2023 that affected around 688 hectares of heath and forest landscape.
Statistical backgrounds
The problem of forest fires in Germany is documented by extensive statistics that have been kept by the federal administration since the 1970s. Area sizes, causes and necessary expenditure for forest fire prevention are recorded. It is of great importance not only to use forests, but also to protect and preserve them. The strategy aims to protect forest areas from destruction by fire and to minimize the number and area size of future fires, such as BLE explained.
Forest fires are a serious issue in Germany that not only affects the local population, but is also of great relevance for the entire environment. The incident at Jüterbog reminds us that the dangers are not just theoretical. It is all the more important that the authorities learn from these experiences in order to combat future fires more effectively and better prevent them.
