Schönhagen Airport: Less bureaucracy, more future for the region!

A lot has happened at Schönhagen airfield since the beginning of 2023. The previously required Prior Permission Required (PPR), which had to be issued by air traffic control in Bremen, is now no longer required. This regulation was particularly challenging for aircraft that navigate by instruments and was often associated with delays. Managing director Klaus-Jürgen Schwahn emphasizes that this change has made the economic region more attractive because aircraft can now land more flexibly without air traffic control often having to make last-minute decisions.

This simplification is particularly beneficial for the approximately 45,000 arrivals and departures that Schönhagen records every year. In comparison, Rostock-Laage Airport only had 9,017 flight movements last year. Despite the positive news, the airport does not expect a sharp increase in flight movements due to the elimination of the PPR, as the goal is to increase the quality of the location rather than just attract more traffic. The existing arrival and departure procedures remain unchanged to avoid conflicts with Berlin Airport and the nearby bird sanctuary.

Strong economic development

Schönhagen airfield is not only a transport hub, but also an important economic location. There are 45 companies based on the site, providing over 250 jobs. The district and the city of Trebbin cover a deficit of several hundred thousand euros every year in order to maintain operations. The construction of a new section of the Schönhagen Aviation Technology Park is also planned, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled to begin in October.

The planned construction project will take place on an area of 50,000 square meters, on a former runway that has not been used for some time. The project is focused on economic development and is intended to help make Schönhagen even more attractive for companies and aircraft movements.

Educational programs for military students

In a completely different area, the Sonoran Desert Institute (SDI) provides support for military students who want to pursue their educational goals. With unique online programs, including the Associate of Science in Firearms Technology degree and multiple certificates, the institution is well positioned to meet student needs. These programs focus on the firearms industry and provide extensive knowledge of firearms and gunsmithing technology.

The tension between progressive developments, as can be observed at Schönhagen airfield, and SDI's stable educational offerings, makes it clear how diverse Cologne is as a local business location. It remains to be seen what impact the new measures will have in the long term. But one thing is certain: there is something going on!
