The mayoral election in Jüterbog is causing great excitement. In recent days, the city's political landscape has changed drastically. Weber is not suspicious of the election workers and focuses on the around 40 invalid votes. “I want to ensure clarity and trust in the electoral process,” he explains. The law requires concrete evidence of errors or irregularities in order to justify a recount, which has now become necessary in Jüterbog due to the close results.

All three candidates are independent in an election campaign that has been heavily influenced by the politics of the last few months. The former AfD mayor Arne Raue has taken his place in the Bundestag and is bringing a breath of fresh air into Jüterbog politics.

Commitment of election workers

A central point for the correct conduct of the election are the election workers. Many of them, like the committed Ms. Schwintzer, have been campaigning for a fair election for years. Ms. Schwintzer is now retired, but she cares about the political process, so she works as an election worker. Their duties include checking ballots and counting votes, which is particularly important to ensure transparency.

In Jüterbog, around 90 percent of the election workers are party members, but this is not absolutely necessary. The poll workers receive compensation and can look forward to free drinks during their work. They particularly enjoy the opportunity to meet old friends at the polling station while they carry out their painstaking tasks.

The situation in Jüterbog reflects the challenges that many cities in Germany face. While voters are eagerly awaiting the results of the recount, it remains to be seen whether Tilman Weber can use the opportunity to turn his election slogan “Bock auf Jüterbog” into reality.
