Association of winegrowers: Baruther Urstromtal is blooming again!
A fresh wind is blowing through viticulture in Brandenburg. Four farmers south of Berlin got together and founded the Baruther Urstromtal wine-growing association. This was done by maz-online.de reports, where the founding is presented as a promising step in the regional winemaking history. Reiner Wittkowski appears as the club's spokesman, supported by Gernot Kleinlein, Oliver Franck and Ferdinand von Lochow. The aim of this interest group is to optimally coordinate the development of the area and to bundle the marketing of the wines.
The founding is not just an organizational measure, but also the first step towards applying for a common growing area. Germany has a total of 13 wine-growing regions, including Rheinhessen and Moselle, and the Baruther Urstromtal would like to join them. The efforts are supported by District Administrator Kornelia Wehlan and Agriculture Department Manager Andreas Jende, who emphasize the importance of viticulture in the region.
Historical wine culture and modern challenges
The revival of viticulture in Baruth is not new. As early as the 16th century, Pastor Johann Coler noticed that Baruther wine was very popular and was valued by many great gentlemen. The old city coat of arms of Baruth also features vines with grapes. However, viticulture experienced a dry spell and the popularity of beer increased. Nowadays, attempts are increasingly being made to bring back the cultural and landscape diversity of viticulture, as shown by the project surrounding the new vineyard on the Mühlenberg, which officially belongs to the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region. Fungus-resistant varieties such as Johanniter, Helios and Solaris were planted here to withstand the challenges of climate change taz.de notes.
But climate change is more than just lip service. How agriculture.de reported, it brings with it extreme weather events that pose a real challenge for grape vines. Late frosts and dry heat periods are just some of the problems winegrowers face. Innovative solutions, such as the development of new fungus-resistant grape varieties, could help ensure the quality and quantity of the harvest. Excessive heat periods and heavy rain not only affect the harvest, but also require new irrigation concepts.
Cooperation is the magic word
The new winegrowers in the Baruther Urstromtal have also decided to use shared resources and employ staff in order to work more economically. Such collaboration is crucial for the association's members to jointly market the wines and organize events that attract visitors. The community seems to be open to new members - those interested can contact Reiner Wittkowski directly.
The first successes have already been recorded; Ferdinand von Lochow will reap his first harvest this year. Together with well-known wineries in the region, it is clear that viticulture in Brandenburg could experience a new beginning. The upcoming “Baruther Weinbergfest” on September 22nd will certainly be a highlight for wine lovers and a further step towards a flourishing wine culture in the Brandenburg conurbation.
