700 meters of freedom: Thomsdorf celebrates new street after a long dry spell!

The long waiting time is over: after more than a decade, a 700 meter long asphalt road in Thomsdorf is finally released again. This was ceremoniously announced by the municipality after the road was in a questionable condition for years. Mayor Hans-Jürgen Döhring emphasized the urgency of the renovation, which was already discussed in the construction committee in 2012. At that time it was clear that the road came from the GDR period and was ailing in many areas.

Smaller repairs were carried out, but there were fundamental problems, which significantly impaired the quality of life of the residents. The breakthrough finally came on December 6, 2024, when the country's approval notice was granted for the renovation. Fortunately, the country took over 75 percent of the total costs of around 253,000 euros.

efficient implementation

Thanks to a rapid processing, the Prenzlauer ADS asphalting company was able to complete the construction within just 14 days. In order to carry out the construction work without any problems, a bypass was set up during the renovation. This caused minimal restrictions for the residents who liked to accept the inconvenience. The old lane ceiling was milled off, a new asphalt layer was applied and the curbs was renewed. Planning and organization took over the specialists from the Street & Area office from Zehdenick.

Mayor Frank Zimmermann emphasized that no other road construction project was realized in the community in front of Thomsdorf. He praised the excellent cooperation of all those involved and underlined the reliability of local mayor Döhring. The new street now runs directly past the new playground and not only ensures a better connection, but also a noticeable increase in quality of life in the area.

background to the transport infrastructure

This renovation is part of a larger context that municipalities have to approach more and more. In Germany, the preservation and expansion of transport infrastructures face major challenges. According to the German Institute for Urban Studies (DIFU), the investment requirement will amount to around 372 billion euros by 2030. Here, motorized individual transport causes around 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. But it often fails due to the financial means that are needed for improvement.

Almost half of the street bridges in Germany are in poor condition, which underlines the urgency of projects such as in Thomsdorf. In a comprehensive study, the DIFU determined that the greatest investment requirement on subway and tram lines falls, but municipalities such as Thomsdorf also face the need to continuously modernize their infrastructure in order to develop sustainable transport systems.

We can be curious to see how the situation will develop in the coming years. One thing is certain: the release of Thomsdorfer Straße is a step in the right direction to increase the quality of life of the citizens and at the same time contribute to the turn of traffic.
