Swimming fun in MV: DRK and brewery start prevention campaign!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, an unusual partnership will make bathing fun safer in the future. The regional association of the German Red Cross (DRK) together with the Mecklenburg Brewery Lübz launched the campaign “Safely refreshed. Together for MV.” brought into being. The aim of this initiative is to combine the joy of swimming with education about the dangers that can arise, particularly when drinking alcohol. This specifically points out the responsible consumption of the alcohol-free beer “Lübzer 0.0%”. The aim is to draw attention to the risks when swimming, which are often due to excessive consumption of alcohol, as the Uckermarkkurier reports.

Special events will take place on August 7th in the Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf. During a big day of action, the volunteer lifeguards of the DRK Wasserwacht have the opportunity to put their skills to the test. Not only is first aid practiced there, but an interactive “intoxication glasses alcohol level parkour” is also offered. This gives participants a vivid insight into how alcohol impairs the ability to react and can therefore endanger safety when swimming.

Important safety measures

Awareness of the dangers in water is extremely important, especially when it comes to drowning. Because as the Maltese explain, self-protection should always have priority. Anyone who finds themselves in a dangerous situation quickly makes decisions that can endanger their own life and that of the drowning person. Therefore, it is advisable not to simply jump into the water. Instead, rescuers should approach from a safe point and possibly use aids such as swimming rings or ropes. This makes it easier to save a drowning person without putting the rescuer in danger.

In the event of a swimming accident, you need to act quickly. Every second counts because lack of oxygen can have devastating consequences. The first step we recommend is to ventilate the affected person, which is also possible in shallow water. The Maltese have valuable tips on how to react in an emergency to save someone's life.

Education for sustainable security

In order to ensure long-term safety in the water, sound training is essential. The ASB offers various courses in water rescue services that are aimed at committed citizens. No previous knowledge is required as the broad training is also designed for beginner swimmers. The training extends to specialized courses such as water rescuers or lifeboat pilots. The goal is clear: more people should be made aware of the dangers of water and at the same time trained to be able to help effectively in an emergency, according to ASB Berlin.

Thanks to this cooperation and the important educational work, the initiators are looking forward to a safe summer swimming in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
