Bundeswehr closes proceedings against AfD politician Hannes Gnauck!
The Bundeswehr has ended disciplinary proceedings against AfD politician Hannes Gnauck after five long years. This decision was announced today and received widespread attention on the social networks of Gnauck, a former senior sergeant. The politician published a letter from the North Military Service Tribunal that officially ended the proceedings. The reason for the disciplinary measures was Gnauck's classification as an extremist due to his involvement in the AfD and the Junge Alternative (JA) in Brandenburg, as svz.de reports.
During the trial, Gnauck was barred from all military obligations; he was not allowed to enter barracks or wear a uniform. He also suffered from stigmatization, media agitation and insults in parliament. In his statement, Gnauck emphasized that there were never any charges or convictions. The process has been on hold for the last year and a half after Gnauck entered the Bundestag in 2021 and enjoyed immunity there. This immunity was ultimately lifted in May 2024 to allow for judicial disciplinary proceedings that had previously been dormant. The background to the waiver of immunity was also a series of statements by Gnauck against asylum seekers and foreigners, as tagesschau.de explains in detail.
An eventful career
In 2020, Gnauck was classified as a “suspected case of right-wing extremism” by the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD). This led to a strict ban on uniforms and service, while he was also in charge of the Junge Alternative, which was classified as “secure right-wing extremist” in 2023. Gnauck also did not apologize for his attitude. Regarding the discussions about lifting his immunity, he said that he found the reasoning to be “incomprehensible and extremely questionable”. At the same time, he is looking forward to the end of his period of service, which is planned for autumn 2028, which will make him feel “completely rehabilitated” after the completion of the proceedings, according to svz.de.
Extremism in the Bundeswehr
The Gnauck case reflects a larger problem within the Bundeswehr that continues to come into the public eye. According to bpb.de, there have been repeated right-wing extremist incidents since the founding of the Bundeswehr. These range from the arrest of Bundeswehr officer Franco A. for preparing a violent act endangering the state to an increase in suspected cases, which reached 1,049 in 2023, with 776 (74%) relating to right-wing extremism. There have been some more positive developments in recent years, with numbers of suspected cases declining compared to a peak in 2021 when 1,242 cases were documented.
The Bundeswehr is responsible for protecting and defending the democratic community, and extremist attitudes contradict its self-image. Measures to prevent extremism are therefore essential, including screening applicants and training for supervisors. Current figures show that around 50 people were identified in 2023 who were considered right-wing extremists or Reich citizens and who have already left the Bundeswehr. Overall, dealing with extremist incidents in an area as sensitive as the Bundeswehr remains a challenge that continues to attract public attention.
