Drama in Drense: Beaver parents desperately fight for their young!
On Thursday afternoon, a tragic incident in the Uckermark caused sad moments and widespread support from the Uckermark animal rescue team. An attentive resident from Drense noticed that his dog hit a storm drain while walking on the A20. What he discovered was a family of beavers that had fallen into a deep shaft. The brave man first tried to save the three trapped beavers with a board, but without success. Finally he made the crucial call to animal rescue.
The Uckermark animal rescue team quickly mobilized four members who rushed to the scene in two vehicles. The animals were discovered there at a depth of two meters. First, the rescue workers managed to save the mother and the father, who weighed 30 to 35 kilograms. Tragically, the beaver offspring was found dead in the water. To give the parents the opportunity to say goodbye to their young animal, an animal rescuer climbed into the shaft and pulled out the dead animal. Painful for the family, who then disappeared into a nearby lake.
The dangers to wild animals
The animal rescue also reported dangerous places in the area, as there are not yet blocked storm drains nearby, which can also pose a danger to other animals. Pascal Neumann, the club's boss, suspects that the boy fell into the shaft while the parents tried to help him. This was the first joint use of both animal rescue vehicles, with one vehicle stationed in Prenzlau and the other in Templin. The animal rescue team's coordination and quick response were crucial to at least saving the parents.
Thursday's operation was not the only one that the Uckermark animal rescue service has carried out successfully recently. Numerous other animals have also been rescued in recent weeks. The deployment statistics show that the animal rescue rescued numerous cats, birds and even a lamb. However, these missions are not just limited to the beavers. Hedgehogs in particular are in high season now, as the first hedgehog babies have already been born. Hedgehogs need at least 600 to 800 grams to safely go into hibernation. Habitat destruction and insect deaths pose serious challenges for this species.
Support and sponsorships
In order to support the protection and rescue of these animals, the Uckermark animal rescue is urgently looking for help. They need food – both dry and wet food, as well as mealworms and soldier fly larvae. Animal-loving people also have the opportunity to become a sponsor. A monthly donation of 20 euros ensures the care of a hedgehog and is rewarded with a certificate. Supporters can also make donations on various platforms such as Amazon or Betterplace to support the important work of animal rescue. Every euro counts in order to continue animal protection work in the region on a comparable scale.
The situation surrounding the beavers in distress and the ongoing operations of the Uckermark animal rescue company impressively show how important sensitivity and quick action are in animal protection. The collaboration between local residents and animal rights activists creates a community that is committed to saving the animals.
