Prenzlau's diverse history
Prenzlau looks back on over 800 years of history. The city was first mentioned in a document in 1187. From the Slavic settlement in the 7th century to the founding of the city by German settlers in the 1270s, Prenzlau has a lot to tell. The city was strategically located on a navigable pass over the Ucker and at the intersection of important trade routes, which contributed to its early prosperity. The Pomeranian Duke Barnim I granted the city city rights in 1234.
The impressive city wall, built in 1287, stretches for 2.6 kilometers and was an important element of the city's fortifications. Originally secured with ramparts and ditches, the wall remains a striking landmark of Prenzlau today, reflecting the city's eventful history. Important buildings such as the St. Mary's Church from the 13th century and the Dominican monastery, founded around 1273, bear witness to the city's cultural flourishing in the Middle Ages.
As history shows, Prenzlau has suffered from various military conflicts, particularly in the Thirty Years' War and during the destruction of the Second World War, where 85 percent of the historic buildings were lost. Nevertheless, the city shows an impressive reconstruction and continuous development that began in 1952, as well as numerous renovation projects after the fall of the Wall.
The upcoming city tours offer an excellent opportunity to get an idea of Prenzlau's rich history and traditions. If you would like to find out more, you can find detailed information and the option to book tickets on the Prenzlau City Information website.
