Violence at the house entrance: Uckermärker attacks passers-by and the police!

A disturbing altercation occurred in a quiet residential area in Prenzlau late on Tuesday evening, November 4th. A 29-year-old man repeatedly kicked the front doors on Robert-Schulz-Ring, causing a stir. The incident escalated when he suddenly punched a 37-year-old passerby in the face. While the victim was on the ground, the attacker continued his attacks, further inflaming the situation. But the 37-year-old fought back bravely with pepper spray and was finally able to escape, as [Nordkurier](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/uckermark/freude-eskaliert-am-haus entrance-4073413) reports.

The alerted police arrived at the scene a short time later, only to also become victims of the perpetrator's aggressive behavior. The 29-year-old kicked around, tried to hit the head and insulted the officers. Despite the rough conditions, the police managed to overpower the aggressive man and take him away in handcuffs. He was taken into custody to sleep off his intoxication after an alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 1.87. There is also suspicion that he may have been under the influence of drugs.

Investigations and backgrounds

Fortunately, neither the police officers nor those involved had to deal with any injuries. The perpetrator, who was already known to the police, is now facing investigations for resisting law enforcement officers, bodily harm and damage to property.

This incident highlights a serious issue: violence against police officers has come into increasing focus in recent years. Statistics show that over 38,000 acts of violence against police officers were registered in Germany in 2018; the majority of the suspects were male and often drunk. The topic is gaining increasing importance in public and political circles, especially with regard to the need to ensure the safety of emergency services and at the same time protect the rights of citizens, as explained in the dossier of the Federal Agency for Civic Education.

Violence related to police services

The challenges police officers face are complex. On the one hand, the police have a state monopoly on violence and are allowed to use force in certain situations, but this also raises questions about human rights, especially when the use of force appears inappropriate or illegitimate. In recent years there has been increased discussion about the experiences of violence police officers experience while on duty and the circumstances that can lead to such attacks.

A reform in 2017 led to the introduction of the offense of “assaulting law enforcement officers” in order to make the penalties for such attacks more severe. But given the increase in acts of resistance against police officers, the question remains as to how these developments can be effectively addressed. Politicians are under pressure to find solutions that respect and protect both the safety of emergency services and the rights of citizens.

In this way, the interplay between police use of force, the protection of citizens and the need for transparent and regulated dealings with both sides of the coin is increasingly becoming the focus of social debates.
