Koi carp robbery: The Leumann family mourns their missing fish!

At the beginning of the week, Steffi Leumann had to endure a shocking sight in her allotment. A hole in the fence and open doors initially suggested a break-in into the gazebo. But video surveillance of the house showed that there was no damage. Instead, Leumann discovered at the pond that over a dozen beloved koi carp had disappeared. Unknown people had drained the water and taken the valuable fish with them, like them SVZ reported.

“The thieves must have used brute force,” said the concerned family. Only a small, black and white koi survived the whole thing and was brought to safety. The financial damage amounts to several thousand euros, which puts a heavy burden on the Leumanns, who have devoted a lot of effort to caring for their pond over the past three years. The family's twelve-year-old son in particular had a close bond with the fish, and the planned expansion of the pond has now been stopped.

A shocking crime

As the People's voice described in detail, this is not an isolated case. At another location on Möckeraner Straße it was also reported that several large koi carp were stolen. The loss was discovered by the owner on Monday, as was the financial damage, which is also in the four-digit range.

The question arises as to how far these criminal activities extend. On Sunday night, the owner saw suspicious people, but when the police arrived on site there was nothing left. The officers left again, but now have to determine whether there is a connection to the subsequent theft of the fish.

On the trail of the perpetrators

A look beyond the horizon shows that the problem of koi carp theft does not only affect the Leumanns. In Kiebitzweg in Celle, for example, young koi carp were also stolen on June 14, 2024. Here the water level had been lowered by draining a large part of the pond in order to kidnap the animals. The Celle press reported that around 30 young koi carp were stolen without the perpetrators taking any other items.

Asking for help is always an important step. The police are urgently looking for witnesses who can help solve such crimes in order to prevent future thefts. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will be caught and that the affected families can get their beloved animals back.

It is now clear to the Leumanns that in the future they only want to buy inexpensive goldfish to make life more difficult for thieves. Another example of what unfortunately happens again and again in the community. The shock is deep and the hope for improvement is dimming.
