Schwedt under pressure: Citizens urgently demand improvements and solutions!

Schwedt an der Oder, a city often associated with the PCK refinery, the paper factory and the prefabricated buildings, is at the center of the discussion about quality of life. According to a reader survey by the Nordkurier media group, which assessed numerous aspects of life in Schwedt, there is a mixed picture of citizens' satisfaction. The survey returned a quality of life rating of 6.63 and highlighted the challenges facing the city. It is therefore hardly surprising that many residents leave the city to take advantage of better leisure activities in Szczecin. The criticism is not new: long waiting times for general practitioners and a lack of leisure options and leisure facilities are loudly criticized by residents. Particular mention is made of the push for more offerings for teenagers and young adults, especially evening activities, which are severely lacking in Schwedt.

Another point that makes life difficult for Swedes is the traffic noise from Polish trucks, which is found to be unbearable. In addition, the discussion about cleanliness in the city continues again and again, with additional trash cans and the demolition of the empty “Uckermark passages” being called for. Residents are concerned about increasing drug problems and violence on the streets and are calling for more controls. The pollutant emissions from the refinery also leave their mark on the perception of the city.

Older voices and new ideas

Thanks to a survey in which 16,664 people took part, valuable insights into the needs of a wide range of citizens were gained. Older citizens rate the senior citizen offerings in Schwedt at 6.80 and would like more benches to rest on.

In this context, Martin Grunert recently took over management of the leisure facilities in Schwedt. Having grown up in the region, he sees it as his responsibility to improve the leisure activities on offer and to lead a strong team. Grunert, who comes from a fitness background and has a personal connection to the Waldbad and AquariUM, plans to introduce new health programs and corporate fitness. Its goal is to specifically develop the existing leisure activities, especially for schools and children. “I am positively surprised by the quality of life and the cultural offerings in Schwedt,” he states, attaching importance to simple processes and good service in the facilities.https://stadtwerkezeitung.info/schwedt/2025/05/26/vorstellen-martin-grunert-der-neue-leiter-freizeitstätten/

Quality of life initiatives

There is also a particular focus on the infrastructural challenges that demographic change brings with it. Studies as part of the LebensWert project show how important it is to improve the quality of life in small towns. The initiative is concerned, among other things, with creating better framework conditions in areas such as water and wastewater systems and local mobility. Such projects could make a decisive contribution to satisfying the needs of Schwedters and noticeably increase the attractiveness of the city.https://www.isoe.de/projekt/lebenswert-entwicklungsmanagement-zum-erhalt-der-lebensqualitaet-in-kleinstaedten-im-demografien-wandel

Schwedt is not only a place that has to contend with many challenges, but also a place where citizens have the courage and ideas to actively fight for positive change. This should give food for thought and could set the course for a positive change in the right direction.

The city remains exciting and it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the future. In any case, there is great hope for more leisure activities, better medical care and a higher quality of life!

Further information on the results of the home check and citizens' reactions is expected in the coming week.https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/uckermark/den-schwedtern-stinkt-s-mitunter-violent-doch-sie-sicht-opportunities-fuer-ihre-stadt-3900339
