Scandal on the Baltic Sea: Holidaymakers drink chemicals instead of drinks!
A frightening incident recently occurred in a bar in Sellin on the island of Rügen. A holidaymaker from Lower Saxony who was a guest there in March 2025 suffered significant health problems due to a serious mix-up. Instead of a refreshing drink, he was served a corrosive chemical, resulting in painful injuries. The 62-year-old immediately complained of pain in his mouth and upper body and was immediately taken to a clinic, where doctors confirmed he was “significantly injured”. These and other details were revealed by [Uckermark Kurier](http://www.uckermarkkurier.de/regional/ruegen/erhebliche-veraetzungen-ostsee-urlauber-wird-chemikalie-statt-getraenk-serviert-und-niemand-will- Schuld-sein-4071614).
The Stralsund public prosecutor's office has now announced that no criminal consequences will be drawn against the restaurant operator. A requested penalty order for negligent bodily harm was rejected because responsibility for the mix-up could not be clearly assigned. This happened after investigators were unable to prove any specific breach of duty of care. It turned out that the cleaning product was mistakenly placed in a beverage container. The service worker who was on duty that day exercised her right to remain silent, which made the investigation even more difficult.
Investigation completed
At the Stralsund district court it was decided not to take any further measures. The investigation is now complete and cannot be resumed. Nevertheless, the affected holidaymaker could file a lawsuit for compensation for pain and suffering, with the responsible court likely being the Stralsund District Court. It remains to be seen how this incident will develop legally and whether the holidaymaker will be compensated for his painful experiences.
These serious incidents raise serious questions about safety in restaurants. How can dangerous substances be stored improperly? The incident took place at around 1pm on Monday and police are now looking for witnesses to more fully investigate the case.
It is unfortunate that such serious mistakes are made in an industry that is supposed to serve the well-being of guests. At a time when tourism and hospitality are at a premium, the utmost care should be taken when handling food and drinks.
Looking back, this incident casts a dark note on the image of gastronomy in this beautiful holiday region. For future visits to the catering industry, guest safety should always be a priority.
