Templin cyclists break record: over 90,000 kilometers for the climate!
From May 12th to 31st, 2025 there was really something going on in Templin again: the city took part in the Climate Alliance's international competition for the third time - the CITY CYCLING. This year there were 457 active participants from 29 teams, including students, parents, teachers and even grandparents, who together covered over 91,000 kilometers on their bikes. The “Flotten Waden” team from the “Am Egelpfuhl” elementary school cycled the hardest, covering over 17,000 kilometers, and secured first place in the team ranking, as the Nordkurier reports.
However, this was a decrease compared to the previous year, when Templin cyclists covered over 117,546 kilometers. The unstable weather during the promotional period causes many cyclists to leave their bikes behind. Nevertheless, the numbers are impressive, and the participants were very happy about taking climate-friendly routes. The return of the popular biennale attracted many citizens and even politicians to actively do something for climate protection.
Results and award ceremony
The award ceremony took place on June 22nd during the City Wall Festival, where the best teams and individual cyclists were awarded prizes. The team rankings clearly showed the rankings:
| Place | team | kilometers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Egelpfuhl School | 17,166.4 |
| 2. | Bicycle service Winkler | 11,611.3 |
| 3. | Zumba team “Kettenblitz” | 9,124.5 |
The individual drivers were also able to shine with proud performances. In the men's race, Michael Harms took first place with 1,281.5 kilometers, while Margit Schindler also achieved a fantastic result in the women's race with 1,137.9 kilometers. In the category for participants up to 15 years old, the young cyclists stood out, with Jakob Herwig surpassing the competition with 475.9 kilometers.
Climate protection and cycling infrastructure
This campaign not only promotes competition, but also sends a strong signal about the need for better cycling infrastructure. According to the Federal Environment Agency, the aim of the CITY CYCLING competition is to encourage people to cycle every day in order to enjoy health benefits and sustainable mobility. Every kilometer counts, especially when it is traveled instead of a car.
This initiative is very well received not only in Templin, but nationwide and beyond. Participants are encouraged to stay active as the overall period for the campaign ends in September 2025 and the results will be published in October.
Be it for personal reasons or in the name of climate protection, the Templiners have shown that they can keep a cool head - even if the weather wasn't always good. The coming years will show whether it is possible to increase the impressive numbers and motivate even more citizens to take up cycling. In the end, it's not just the competition that counts, but an entire way of life. Who knows: Maybe Templin will one day become a cycling city?
