Tragedy in Kühlungsborn: 80-year-old swimmer drowns in the Baltic Sea

A tragic incident occurred in the Baltic Sea near Kühlungsborn. An 80-year-old local woman who regularly went swimming died while swimming. According to information from Uckermark Kurier, the woman was seen entering the water on Tuesday evening, July 2, 2025, at around 5:45 p.m. The alarm went off when she didn't return after about 15 minutes. A relative on the beach reported the missing person.

The water police responded immediately to the emergency call and started a search. The rescue helicopter discovered the woman's lifeless body around 6:35 p.m., about 80 meters from the coast. Despite resuscitation measures that were immediately initiated, the woman could not be saved. The criminal police have started investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.

A sad start to the season

We must view this swimming accident in the context of a worrying trend. The 80-year-old is the third bathing death this season. A 65-year-old swimmer had an accident near the Prerow pier on May 15th, followed by a 71-year-old vacationer who lost her life on June 15th. These fatal incidents are part of a larger problem, as the Ostsee Zeitung explains.

In 2024, the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) counted 29 drowned people in the waters of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while in 2023 only 20 deaths were registered. A frightening increase that shows how important it is to be aware of the dangers of swimming. The DLRG recorded a total of 411 fatal accidents in water bodies in Germany in 2023, an increase of 31 compared to the previous year. After three years of rising numbers, the 400 mark has been exceeded again, prompting DLRG President Ute Vogt to make parents of young children in particular aware of the dangers that summer brings with it.

Swim wisely

Especially at this time of year, when the water temperatures are inviting, it is important to be particularly careful when swimming. The circumstances that led to this tragic incident must be investigated in detail. The criminal police will take all necessary steps to provide further information.

The death of the 80-year-old woman reminds us all how important it is to move consciously and safely in the water. A few minutes of inattention can have fatal consequences, which is why swimming in parked water should be taken seriously in every respect. We hope that such tragic incidents can be avoided in the future.
