Unforgettable journey: 87-year-olds discovered Europe in the cult residential mobile!

There are no limits to the desire to travel: Dietmar Hesse and his 87-year-old mother Helga are a lively example that the world can be explored full of adventure even in later years. Together they have been touring Europe in their rustic motorhome for four years. The vehicle, a VW T3 from 1987, was built up by the Tischer company, and it is a real unique - only 29 of them were ever manufactured. "My parents used to do great trips and I wanted to continue the inheritance," explains the 61-year-old.

Together with his mother, Dietmar spent a lot of time to prepare the motorhome for her needs. The heart is a simple but practical equipment: a second -flame gas stove, refrigerator, toilet, shower and a hot water boiler are ready. "Of course we know the special challenges that such a gear brings on four wheels," added Dietmar with a smile. It was particularly important to him to create two separate sleeping places - after all, he does not want to share the narrow space with his mother.

a motorhome with history

Dietmar remembers: "30 years ago my family started this dream, and today I sit here with my mother and enjoy the time with her." After the father's death 13 years ago, they decided to discover the world together again. They have already covered many routes on their travels, including southern France and Italy, but also to the North and Baltic Sea. For the coming weeks there is an eight -day tour to Poland, Helga's home.

The condition of your vehicle is impressive: the motorhome already has over 400,000 kilometers on the speedometer. "We always find a parking space for the night, that's the nice thing about caravaning," emphasizes Dietmar, who has to take care of constant repair work. A wardrobe recently had to be replaced after water damage.

changes for motorhome fans

The topic of motorhomes is also exciting through new EU regulations. From 2028, motorhomes with a total weight of up to 4.25 tons may be driven with the normal class B driving license. This may be important for many motorhome fans, because so far only vehicles up to 3.5 tons have been piloted. This weight increase is part of a reform of the EU driving license guideline and could significantly expand the selection of motorhomes-the new, better equipped models have to be not only comfortable, but also safe.

With almost 96,400 new registrations in 2024, it can be seen that caravaning is booming in Germany. Almost 13 million Germans stated that they go on vacation with a camping vehicle, trend or not. Especially the popularity among the age groups between 40 and 59 speaks for itself - it is no secret that the freedom of traveling in nature is very important to many.

In a time when vacation plans are often shaped by uncertainty, travel with the motorhome offers a reliable way to discover the world in your own way. Dietmar and Helga set new standards and prove that adventure time is not a question of age. With a small smile, Dietmar concludes: "I cook in our motorhome and do not use the shower - that helps to avoid flooding."

Life in the mobile homeland is full of surprises!
