Water buffalo in the Uckermark: An old estate becomes a pleasure hotspot!
In the Uckermark, more precisely in Friedrichsfelde, the Kath family has been making a name for itself with water buffaloes for ten years now. There, in the middle of nature, they currently keep 70 of these gentle giants, which are not only popular farm animals but also play an important role in the Sernitzniederung nature reserve. These animals are true landscape stewards! They ensure that the valuable wetlands and meadows in the region are sustainably preserved, which benefits both biodiversity and landscape protection. According to rbb24, the Kath family has set itself the task of not only protecting nature with their water buffalo, but also offering regional products.
But that's not all! The family plans to significantly expand its product range in the coming winter months. There is currently delicious buffalo salami available in selected regional stores such as in Prenzlau, but that will soon no longer be everything. A former estate is currently being renovated for direct marketing and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. In addition to selling regional products, space will also be created there for events and seminars.
A piece of home for consumers
Jens Kath emphasizes how important the exchange with consumers is. His philosophy is simple: “If you protect nature, you can also make good money from it.” Their products are well received by people because the demand for regional, sustainably produced food is growing. The district supports the family in their projects that combine agriculture, nature conservation and regional development.
A St. Martin's market will be organized on November 8th, where other regional producers will also be represented. Here visitors have the opportunity not only to try the buffalo salami, but also to discover other delicacies from the region. A good place to find out about local agriculture and get in direct contact with the producers!
Water buffalo for nature conservation
The water buffaloes themselves are not only used to maintain the landscape, they also make a significant contribution to preserving biodiversity in the region. This has been highlighted in a recent conservation project that highlights the importance of these animals to ecosystems. According to bauernfarm.com, the goal is to protect and promote the habitats of many animal and plant species through the sustainable management of these areas.
A holistic approach that shows how agriculture, nature conservation and regional development can go hand in hand. There really is something to be said, not just for the environment, but also for the community. Everyone who buys and supports regionally is doing their part to preserve these valuable projects. So stay tuned and support the regional farmers who work with passion and commitment for a sustainable future!
