Wolves in Templin: Citizens ask, politicians answer - safety tips included!

In Templin, the return of the wolves causes heated discussions and many unanswered questions. During a recent information event, Mayor Christian Hartphiel (SPD) spoke of the need to present reliable figures and facts. This event, led by Carina Vogel from the State Office for the Environment, aimed to educate citizens about wolf monitoring, herd protection and the subsidized compensation measures for affected animal owners. The community faces challenges affecting wolf management and the population shows great interest in effective solutions. According to Nordkurier, there has been a confirmed wolf pack in the Tangersdorfer Heide since 2018, which gave birth to four puppies in 2024/25.

The presence of wolves represents a major risk for animal owners. A total of 17 tearing incidents were reported in the Uckermark between January and August 2023, 15 of which were clearly related to wolves. 101 sheep, one goat, one beef calf and five wild game were affected. There is therefore a need for action, which is why the Brandenburg Wolf Ordinance provides for regulations for dangerous wolves and wolves that overcome herd protection. Wolves can also overcome live fences, which doesn't make the situation any easier.

Wolves and humans: A sensitive topic

The return of large carnivores brings with it conflicts that not only affect animal husbandry, but also the coexistence of humans and wild animals. [WWF]. This is clearly shown in the fears of wolves. Factual information is the key to reducing these fears.

When it comes to wolf management, it is important to take a long-term, cross-border approach. The wolf management plan, which must be updated regularly, contains essential points such as support for wolf-proof fences and the financial resources that should be made available in the state budget. The BUND Brandenburg rejects the inclusion of the wolf in the Brandenburg hunting law in order to prevent incorrect measures from endangering the species.

Measures and support for those affected

It is very important for livestock farmers in wolf-rich areas to receive appropriate support measures. The state of Brandenburg offers funds for preventive measures. These are intended to help minimize human and animal losses. Scientific research is needed to evaluate new methods and optimize wolf management. They are crucial for a low-conflict coexistence between humans and wolves.

In the discussion about the correct response to wolf sightings, a representative of the State Environment Agency emphasized the need for faster intervention measures. At the same time, the concerns of a participant who is afraid of wolves were taken seriously. It became clear that the behavior of these animals is unique - they watch people and do not flee like many other animals. If sightings occur, experts advise calling the dog to you, calling loudly and making an orderly retreat.

The challenging situation in Templin is not just a local phenomenon, but part of a larger trend that can also be observed in other regions. Integrating facts, providing information and supporting livestock owners are crucial to taking public concerns seriously while promoting the wolf's raison d'être.
