Storms over Berlin: Thunderstorms are moving away, final warnings have been lifted!

On Thursday, June 26th, severe thunderstorms hit Germany and caused a lot of excitement. The effects were particularly noticeable in the eastern half, where the German Weather Service (DWD) urged caution. In cities such as Berlin and Brandenburg, the thunderstorms triggered numerous fire brigade operations, while the all-clear was finally given in the evening. The latest severe thunderstorm warnings have been lifted and no further severe weather was forecast for Friday, it was reported stern.de.

While the DWD warned of possible thunderstorms on Thursday morning, the storm was particularly severe in Thuringia, where the control centers reported a high number of operations. In Berlin, many firefighters had to help when trees fell on streets and paths during the storm. The S-Bahn in Berlin also had to struggle with restrictions; Train traffic was temporarily stopped and could only be gradually resumed late in the evening.

Storm damage in Hesse

Thunderstorm Olger had been raging in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse for three days and was causing alarming conditions. There were a large number of accidents, full cellars and flooded streets, including on Autobahn 66. In a frightening incident, the emergency number 110 in East Hesse was temporarily canceled, which placed additional strain on the emergency services. The fire brigade had to be deployed to over 105 locations by 8 p.m., mainly in the districts of Sindlingen and Sachsenhausen, as well as in downtown Frankfurt, reports kinzig.news.

The roads were dangerous with fallen trees and torn branches and police warned the public to drive carefully as hydroplaning was a major risk. The emergency services fought against an overload of the emergency call lines, while the fire brigade spokesmen described the large number of operations as a considerable challenge.

What can we expect in the coming days?

The weather situation is now slowly calming down, but the forecasts for the coming days show that there may still be stiff gusts, especially in the northeast. Isolated thunderstorms are forecast in the southern regions of Germany on Friday. In addition, a front system is expected from a low near Iceland, which could bring fresh, cooler air to the northern half of Germany. The Weather Dangers Website weatherhazards.de forecasts a decrease in winds overnight, although there could be freshening winds on the coasts and mountainous regions.

The public is still asked to be vigilant and prepare for possible changes in the weather. So stay safe and hopefully enjoy sunny days again soon!
